Minimum Workstation and Software Site License Subcommittee Minutes

----------------------------------------------------------------------

October 19, 2000
Meeting in AH-1120 at 10 a.m.
Diana Osborn, Chair

McAfee
Celia was not at the meeting to give us an update, however when I called her she mentioned that the contract was in process of getting signatures.

WinZip vs PowerArchiver
The committee determined that since PowerArchiver is free and has the same capabilities and similar look and feel to WinZip that it is in the best interest of the campus to move to the installation of PowerArchiver on campus pc's. The issue of touching all the machines may have WinZip already installed was addressed. It was the opinion of many that this could be addressed in normal maintenance on the computers. Technicians should be advised to uninstall any instances of WinZip and install PowerArchiver as machines come in for maintenance. They also should also install PowerArchiver by default to avoid users downloading and installing WinZip. Departments who wish to purchase WinZip on their own are free to do so.

Personal Firewalls
Several packages are currently in evaluation. A subcommittee was formed comprised of Diana Osborn, Don McKee, Wayne Ridge, and Jim Edwards to discuss the pros and cons of each. Programs currently under evaluation are: Zone Alarm, HackerShield, Symantec's product (don't recall the name), Black Ice, and PentaSafe. Others are encouraged to join the committee.

Diskkeeper
Since the costs for workstation and server copies are different, a request for updated numbers breaking out numbers for workstation and server was made. Once these numbers are received the proposal stage on this product can be entered. Cost is currently at $13.11 per copy for workstation and $89.70 per copy for server (server price could drop to $82.00 per copy if we have over 50 server copies requested).

Backup software
The consensus of those present indicated that the Veritas program BackupExec is the main program in use currently for backup. It was determined that Veritas should be contacted for pricing for either Volume purchase or an enterprise or site license agreement, depending on what they offer.

Secure ftp/telnet
VanDyke Technologies program requires SSH2 which is currently not being used on campus. question was brought up (after the meeting) about Teraterm and scp. This needs to be looked at.

Maple
A request for Maple was made. Maple is available currently on rohan as a 9 user license. The Maple engine is included in the "Extended Symbolic Math Toolbox" of MATLAB which provides approx 90% of the functions of Maple. This will be brought up to the requesters.

Altris Vision
Carol Phillips stated via email to Diana that the library purchased a 35 node license for the LA78 classroom and will be inviting MWSSLS to a demonstration. If any department is interested in this program Carol would like to hear from them.

Stata
A request was made to determine other departments using/interested in this program. SSRL was mentioned with the thought that they may have a site or volume purchase agreement already. The requester will be informed of this.

Workstations
Minimum Workstations group will update the next meeting

PowerQuest
The company had contacted Bob Hart early in the week preceding our meeting looking to meet with our group. It was determined that they need to give us more lead time to set up a meeting or present at our regular meeting.

Next MWSSLS meeting will be November 16, 2000 in AH-1120 at 10 a.m.
