Most available instruments that assess aspects of ethnicity and acculturation are limited to use with one ethnic group. For research purposes, it is important to have available a measure of aspects of ethnicity that can be used with multiple ethnic groups. For several years, this project has focused on the development of such a measure. Our goal was to develop an instrument that would have equal validity when used with any American ethnic group.
The Scale of Ethnic Experience (SEE) has just been completed, and the manuscript presenting its psychometric properties is in development. This 47-item self-report instrument assesses four factor-analytically-derived subscales of ethnic experience: Ethnic Identity, Social Affiliation, Perceived Discrimination and Mainstream Comfort. The factor structure of the measure is stable across four ethnic groups: Caucasian-, Filipino-, Mexican- and African-American. Other psychometric properties are sound.
In addition to development of the SEE, we have collected data on a number of other constructs, and are investigating the relationship of ethnicity to those variables. Constructs assessed include anxiety, depression, automatic thoughts, positive/negative affect, binge eating, sex roles, health locus of control, and parental bonding. Also, a project developed by Denise Chavira, doctoral student in the SDSU/UCSD Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology, examined the influence of ethnic variables on Mexican- and Filipino-American performance on the English and Spanish versions of the MMPI-2.
The SEE lab is coordinated by Senaida Fernandez. Currently we are focusing on data analysis and manuscript preparation.
