I liked to offer a few coping strategies for families that have been shown to work through research and personal experience . . .
First, don’t deny that things have changed - and changed dramatically - for your family.
No matter what anyone says, things are not “fine” -
We see this in families all the time - they act like the bomb in their living room hasn’t gone off - indeed, they act like there’s no bomb there at all
I’m not suggesting that it is impossible to get through a major illness in a healthy and productive way - just that families should not underestimate the level of stressor that has just occurred in their family -
Also, we need to get away from feeling that we are failures if we are unhappy, angry, tired, moody, frustrated, etc. - these are normal reactions
