The School of Music and Dance Audio/Visual Library, located in room M-119, contains over 14,000 disc recordings (both long play and compact discs), 800 tapes (audio and video), printed materials for reference use and a small collection of books on opera and related subjects. The library houses the card catalog and computer database as well as listening and viewing carrels.

PROCEDURES.The Audio/Visual Library is generally open about 30 hours a week. Materials do not circulate outside the library except to members of the music and Dance faculty. Students must present their permanent SDSU picture ID card and show current validation to use library equipment. Headphones and recorded materials will be issued at the time of check-in. In keeping with federal copyright laws, recordings may not be taped (copied) by students. Faculty may make one copy of a recording for class use only.

HOLDINGS. The collection of recordings is organized with the purpose of serving the needs of the School's curriculum. Emphasis is upon the listening and study requirement of the courses offered by the school. The collection consists of recordings of the complete history of traditional Western European music, non-Western Music, the history of American jazz and Afro-American jazz. The collection also consists of scores of standard works which can be used in conjunction with the recording. Recordings of Junior, Senior and Graduate Recitals are also archived in the Audio/Visual Library, as are papers and theses written in conjunction with lecture-Recitals. The Audio/Visual Library's collection of books consists of basic reference materials such as Harvard Dictionary, Grove's Dictionary, Historical Anthology of Music and Baker's Biographical Dictionary. The complete music library holdings are housed in the Love Library.
