There are a variety of scholarships that Liberal Studies students can apply for. Some of the ongoing opportunities are described below. Additional opportunities can be found by searching the SDSU Financial Aid Office scholarships search web page. New scholarship opportunities are posted throughout the year so search often. Also, be sure to check the Liberal Studies home page for announcements about new scholarships.
APLE
The Assumption Program of Loans for Education is a competitive teacher incentive program designed to encourage students to become teachers and serve in either a critical teacher shortage area or in schools that meet specific criteria.
APLE may assume up to $11,000 in outstanding educational loan balances in return for four consecutive years of full-time eligible teaching service in a California K-12 public school. Participants must agree to teach in a California public school in a designated subject matter area or in a school that meets criteria specified by the Superintendent of Public Instruction. Up to $8,000 additional loan forgiveness (up to $19,000 total) is available to candidates providing teaching service in special areas, such as mathematics, science, special education and public schools ranked in the lowest 20th percentile.

Division of Undergraduate Studies Study Abroad Incentive Scholarship
This scholarship is intended to support study, research, or internship in SDSU-approved programs abroad. Applications will be accepted from Liberal Studies majors who are enrolled full-time at San Diego State University. Applicants must be in good academic and disciplinary standing.
RUBIE EILEEN CHAPMAN ELEMENTARY EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP
The Rubie Eileen Chapman Elementary Educational Scholarship is open to students who:
+ are currently attending San Diego State University.
+ will declare or have already declared a major in an education related field.
+ have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
+ are actively involved in serving their community as demonstrated by extra-curricular activities, community and church service, and/or work experience.
+ are United States citizens.
+ have demonstrated financial need.

California Retired Teachers Association Grants
The California Retired Teachers Association (CalRTA), Division 78, is offering $1500 scholarships for students working towards a teaching credential. Interested students can download an informational flier and an application here.
Federal and State Grants and Loans
There are many federal and state financial aid programs (including grants, loans and work study), available to all students. To learn more, please visit the Office of Financial Aid website.
The Neva and Ralph Smith Scholarship
The Neva and Ralph Smith Scholarship is designed to help future teachers, especially those with financial need, who are talented and serious about engaging the minds of their students. The application period runs from August to February. The scholarship's requirements and online application can be found by searching under Liberal Studies majors in the Scholarships Search Web site.
Fulbright awards to teach English overseas
There will be 685 Fulbright grants for English Teaching Assistants this next year. Students can review the countries, number of grants for each, level (university, middle or elementary school) and language requirements at this web site:

Activities may include serving as a resource person in conversation groups; providing small group tutorials; work in a language lab; giving talks related to American Studies in English classes or civic/school organizations. Both graduating seniors and graduate students may apply, as may recent alums.
Interested students should review the web site, and plan on attending an Information Session (held in Love Library 430 or 431), from 3-4:30 p.m. on the following days: January 25, February 9, February 22, March 7, March 20, April 11, April 19, April 26, May 8, May 15.
