ENS 664 - SEMINAR: ANTHROPOMETRY AND MOTOR PERFORMANCE

Catalog description. Examination of relationships between body structure and motor performance through the techniques of anthropometry, somatotyping and body composition. Emphasis on growth studies and championship performance levels.

Course requirements.

1. Attendance is required and there will be a short test each week on the previous week’s topics. Participation in the practicals is part of the learning experience.

2. Students will be expected to meet outside class time for practice in measurement.

3. Students are required to serve as subjects for each other in learning the measurements.

4. Familiarity with some basic statistical techniques will be assumed.

5. Two major written projects are required.

(a) A Self Portrait; and

            (b) A Kinanthropometric Research Project.

6. Practice exercises (calculations) will be provided and may be turned in to the instructors        

for checking and comments.

7. Grading. In addition to the above requirements, attendance and tests will contribute to 20% of your grade. The remaining 80% will be determined by the two written projects (40% each). Letter grades will be assigned on a +/- basis.

Week 2. Anthropometry; conventions; landmarks; stature; girths.

Anthropometric Assessment (ISAA), Ch. 1, 2, 3, 5.

 

Week 3. Measurement error; girths.

                Readings: Norton & Olds, 3, 4, 13 (pp. 403-411); KN, Section 2 (from 2-12); ISAA, Ch. 5.

Week 4. Scaling; proportions; skinfolds.
