INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF KINANTHROPOMETRY ISAK REPORT TO ICSSPE - 1997-98 1. Secretary General and Editor. Because of the resignation of our previous Secretary General and Editor of the newsletter, the Executive Council decided to split the positions of Secretary General and Editor. In July 1997 we appointed Dr. Kevin Norton as Secretary General and Dr. Tim Olds as the new Editor for the Kinanthreport. Both are at the University of South Australia in Adelaide. These appointments were confirmed for four years at the ISAK Biennial Meeting, Adelaide, 14 October, 1998. 2. ISAK-Anthropometry Accreditation Scheme. In November, 1996, the Executive Council approved the working model of the ISAK-Anthropometry Accreditation Scheme, and in December, 1997, they approved additional information on the Certification process. Michael Marfell-Jones (NZL) was appointed by the president as Chair of the Accreditation committee. He reports that 10 certification courses have been conducted during the past two years in Australia, Chile, Estonia, Mexico, and New Zealand. Workshops in Kinanthropometry have also been presented in various countries. Nine persons have been approved as Criterion Anthropometrists. A curriculum guide for courses, "Accreditation in Anthropometry" by Gore et al., has been published by the Australian Sports Commission (1998). An international certification course for Levels 1, 2 and 3, was recently held in Adelaide, 7-12 October, 1998. Nine countries were represented among the 25 candidates in this most successful course. 3. Membership. Our numbers are increasing as is the international distribution of members. Members are drawn from 35 countries, with the greatest increases in Australasia and Latin America. We do lose a few members each year, but the trend is good with the number of young colleagues an encouraging sign. 4. Communications. We are developing our ISAK Web page on the Internet, but information is missing for some sections. [http://www.ffk/hr/isak] 5. Awards. Two people were honored by receiving the ISAK Award of Merit. In May 1997, the recipient was Dr. Eduardo De Rose, Brazil, and in May 1998, the recipient was Dr. Otto Eiben, Hungary. 6. Biennial Meetings. ISAK is grateful to Sports Medicine Australia and the University of South Australia, especially Kevin Norton and Tim Olds, for agreeing to host Kinanthropometry VI and our Biennial Meeting, in Adelaide, 13-16 October, 1998. Our next Biennial Meeting, Kinanthropometry VII will be at Brisbane 2000, in conjunction with the ICSSPE Pre Olympic Congress. 7. 1978-1998. It is 20 years since the beginnings of ISAK. The initial organization, called the International Working Group in Kinanthropometry (IWGK), was ratified at a FIMS meeting in Brasilia, 1978, by the then Research Committee of ICSSPE. This followed the agreement to found IWGK by the initial organizers after Kinanthropometry II in Leuven, and the 1st International Kinanthropometry Course in Brussels in the same year. ISAK was founded and a constitution adopted at a meeting in Glasgow, Scotland, on July 20, 1986 during Kinanthropometry III. We have made good progress since then. Part of the preamble to the constitution reads, "ISAK's purpose is to create and maintain an international network of colleagues who represent the world community transcending geography, politics and the bounds of separate disciplines." We hope to continue support of this purpose during the coming years. Respectfully submitted, J.E. Lindsay Carter President ISAK. 10 November 1998. icsspe98.doc 10/24/98
