I> Description
and Goals
Heresy
= marginal, transgressive The
course focuses on a series of significant moments in the formative period
of the French nation-state and considers the questions of identity they
raise as represented in aesthetic productions (text, visual arts) and historical
documents, both modern and pre-modern.We
deal with moments critical to the establishment of specific hegemonies.
We'll be starting with the Cathari and the Albigensian Crusade, thenJoan
of Arc and the Hundred Years War, and finally the Wars of Religion as events
that shaped French national identity. Each of these events brings into
focus a conflict between the normative and the transgressive. The
goal of the course is to expose the processes by which individuals and
societies construct and position themselves within history. You are invited
to consider how individuals respond to the historical subjects, in terms
of gender and/or politics and religion. And
further, to consider how these positions have led to the formation of French
identities, both national and individual, and how they inform and interact
with contemporary French culture.
