FAQs: Study Abroad

Q: Why should I do study abroad?

A: Study abroad is essential to learning a foreign language and culture. It will deepen and broaden your understanding of Latin America and it will give you a significant advantage on the job market and in graduate school if you decide to go on. It will change your world view and help you to become a cosmopolitan citizen of the world.

Q: How do I find a study abroad program that is right for me?

A: There are two main sources of information available to LAS students: The Center for Latin American Studies in AL 377 and Global Crossroads which is physically located in the International Student Center.

Q: Are study abroad programs expensive?

A: Definitely not. The largest single cost will be the loss of wages that you might have earned if you stayed at home. The cost of living in Latin America is less than San Diego. Getting there and back varies a great deal ($200-$1,200 for round trip airfare), depending on where you go. The actual program costs vary somewhat, depending on the program’s sponsor. Programs offered through the Center for Latin American Studies or SDSU are inexpensive compared to private, for-profit programs, or those offered through universities that require additional tuition.

Q: Do I have to take university-level classes in Spanish or Portuguese?

A: It depends on the program. Some language programs assume that you are not ready to study in a foreign language. Other programs offer you an opportunity to take the same classes as students in the host university.

Q: I want to do study abroad, but I can’t get away for a semester or a summer. Can I still do something?

A: Yes. Options include taking a class in Tijuana at a local Mexican university or language school in Ensenada. Classes in Tijuana may require crossing the border 2-3 times a week, and they allow you to live and work at home.

Q: How do I know if the program is high quality?

A: If it is sponsored by Latin American Studies or SDSU, it is a quality program. In all cases, you should consult with LAS or the International Student Center.

Q: Do study abroad programs earn credits towards the degree?

A: Yes, but you must clarify this before you register. See an advisor.

Q: Can I attend a program sponsored by another university or a private company?

A: Yes, but cost is usually higher and credits are less certain. Be certain to contact an advisor in the LAS program before you sign up.
