Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships

General Information for Academic Year 2009-2010

The Center for Latin American Studies will award three to four fellowships to graduate students enrolled in a MA or PhD program combining at least one language course per semester with some aspect of area studies of Latin America. For example, specific courses in your area of study including combinations such as public health in Baja California and advanced Spanish, or education in Mexico and Mixtec studies are eligible. Each scholarship student will receive $15,000 for living expenses during the academic year 2009-2010, as well as payment of all fees for classes taken at San Diego State University.

Preferences

Preferences will be given to students studying a language other than Spanish (e.g., Portuguese, Mixtec, Nahuatl, etc.), but advanced levels of Spanish will be considered.

Eligibility

Students from all disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, and professional fields are eligible to apply. Applicants must:

  • Be enrolled full time in a graduate program combining language and area (Latin America) studies;
  • Be in good academic standing;
  • Be citizens of the U.S. or permanent residents;
  • Show potential for high academic achievement;
  • Use the fellowship to pursue their degree.
  • Be in continuous study during the 2009-2010 academic year, not including thesis writing.

Application

Applicants must include:

  • Personal contact information;
  • Application form;
  • A statement of purpose which includes
    • An explanation of the importance of area studies and language to your research and/or career
    • A description of your research interests and research projects, whether ongoing or planned;
  • Transcripts of graduate and undergraduate courses;
  • A curriculum vitae;
  • Two academic letters of recommendation.

Completed documentation is due in the Center for Latin American Studies (Arts and Letters 377) by 5:00 pm, March 6, 2009. Mailing address:

Award Announcement

Awards for 2009-2010 will be announced on or before March 27, 2009.
