OAXACA SUMMER PROGRAMS

Academic Programs

Dr. Ramona Pérez is a political anthropologist who specializes in the internal dynamics of community development, gender and tourism, motherhood and work, moral economy, and urban neighborhoods. She has been bringing students to Oaxaca, Mexico for San Diego State University since 2001 when the first Mixtec immersion course began. Currently, three course themes are offered in this unique study abroad experience, which promotes academic exploration, language development, and personal growth. Dr. Pérez teaches a research based methods course and coordinates the Mixtec and Zapotec language programs.

Projects

A variety of projects take place during the summer Ethnographic Field Methods course. Students actively participate in the research and implementation of programs surrounding: health and nutrition, women and social change, history and community museums, archival development and research, and other projects within the community.

Student Researchers

Anthropology, Latin American Studies, and Public Health graduate students have used these summer programs as a jumping off point for their own research. While all students work within the research projects of Dr. Pérez during their first summer, many return to develop their own projects. Students have presented their work at professional conferences, collaborated on publications, and used the experience and data in the development of research projects in other locations.
