Summer Course - Women’s Rights and Citizenship (LAS 555 )
With Professor Gloria Zafra from the UABJO University in Oaxaca, Mexico

This class will explore women’s lives in Latin America in the historical context of how feminist movements and academic research evolved until women’s issues entered the main political, economic and cultural agenda. (focus on Mexico, Chile and Argentina). We then turn to the contemporary lives of a variety of women throughout America Latina. We will focus on issues such as human rights, migration and “usos y costumbres” that are limiting the lives of indigenous women.

Call for Papers: Pacific Coast Council on Latin American Studies
This year’s Conference of the Pacific Coast Council on Latin American Studies (PCCLAS) will be held at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, November 7-8, 2008. The conference will bring together scholars, educators, graduate, undergraduate, and high school students, and community members interested in Latin American Studies. Papers from all areas of the social sciences, humanities and the arts and/or cross-disciplinary studies and relating to Latin American/Latino/a Studies are invited. All topics are welcome. Selected papers will be published in the Conference’s Proceedings.
Submissions:
Proposals for single papers and complete sessions are welcome. Single paper proposals should include your paper’s title and abstract (200 word or less), and your name, academic affiliation (if appropriate), and contact information. Session proposals (3 to 4 presenters) should include: the session’s title and contact person; the same information required of single paper proposals for each of the session’s presenters. Proposals to: lead open forums, discussion groups, teaching workshops; to set up booths for graduate or study abroad programs; and/or to screen films or project other media are also welcome.

U.S. Agency for International Development - Public-Private Alliances
USAID is seeking applications to form Global Development Alliances to carry out activities in support of USAID's international development objectives. Alliance partners are expected to bring significant new resources, ideas, technologies, and/or partners to address development problems in countries where USAID is currently working. There are no funding restrictions; however, past awards have ranged from $50,000 to $10

Language Assistants at the University of Murcia
Dates: October 1st to June 30th, 2008/09
Scholarships available:
-5 positions for English speakers
-4 positions for French speakers
-1 position for Italian speaker
-1 position for German speaker
-1 position for Arabic speaker
Benefits:
722 euros/months plus medical insurance.
Assistants' duties:
12 hours/week of language practice with university students.
4 hours/week for student assistance.
To cooperate with Department's professors, Language Service and International Office staff in those activities where a native speaker may be needed.
To attend the follow-up meetings with the Department's professors.
To participate in the University of Murcia's Spanish for Foreigners Language Courses in order to improve their language level.
Candidates are required:
-To be a native speaker of the language to be taught.
-To have a Bachelor's degree in Languages, or to be about to finish those studies by the end of the current academic year.
-Not to have been granted one of these scholarships at the University of Murcia for more than 3 years.
Merits:
-Spanish language proficiency. (Up to 3 points.)
-Academic background. (Up to 5 points.)
-Teaching skills and ability to cooperate and integrate in the university environment, according to the candidate's professors' reports. (Up to 5 points.)
-Previous experience in this type of activities. (Up to 5 points.)
-Being preparing the Doctoral Thesis. (1 point.)
-Having graduated after June 2000. (1 point.)
-Having studied at a university with which the University of Murcia has signed a specific agreement for language assistants' exchanges. (Up to 5 points.)

Job: Latin American Human Rights Education and Research Network
Job Title: Financial Officer/Technical Co-ordinator
The Latin American Human Rights Education and Research Network (RedLEIDH) is a six year project which brings together York University's Centre for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean (CERLAC) and Osgoode Hall Law School in a new network of Latin American universities and civil society organizations to promote human rights education, applied research and capacity-building in the region. CIDA will fund activities until March 2010.
Responsibilities: The Financial Officer/Technical Coordinator is part of a five-person management team based at York University that is responsible for the overall administration and implementation of the RedLEIDH project. The other members of the management team are the Project Coordinator/Project Assistant, the Program Assistant and the two project directors.
The Financial Officer/Technical Coordinator bears primary responsibility for the financial administration, planning and execution of the project and for the general coordination, development and implementation of internet-based systems.
While the current holder of the position combines skills in both finance and computer technology, we realize that this combination may be difficult to find and will consider proposals for part time positions in either finance or in technology.
Qualifications:
- Ability to prepare budgets and other financial and project planning documents
- Minimum 2-3 years related experience in financial management or project management
- Experience working with CIDA projects and experience working with York University preferred
- Experience in developing web portals, distance education tools (eg. Moodle) and software and hardware requirements for same
- Familiarity with business programs including Excel and Word
- Excellent communication skills in English , including ability to write complex reports and communicate clearly with York and CIDA
- As all communication with partners is in Spanish, the individual must have an ability to read and communicate in Spanish, although absolute fluency in Spanish is not required
- Understanding of the political, economic, social and human rights context of Latin America and Canada-Latin America relations
- Ability to work collaboratively within the project team and with a variety of institutional partners in the region
- Strong organizational skills, a self-initiating work ethic, flexibility and effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience working in Latin America an asset
- Ability to travel in Latin America
Terms: 3 month probationary period and annual contracts renewable for the remainder of the project (approximately 2 years)
Work Hours: 5 days per week
Salary: Depending on experience, between $44,000 - $50,000, Benefits and a small raise after probationary period.
Start day: May 26 or as soon as possible.
