CSU Kinesiology Major

Upper Division Competency #8:

demonstrate knowledge of the conditions of safe practice in movement-related contexts across the life span and within diverse populations, and respond appropriately to common injuries occurring during physical activity;

1 HS 170 (First Aid) and/or obtain a First Aid CPR certificate from the Red Cross. Complete course or obtain certificate
Students complete coursework in athletic training, emergency response, and conditioning programs. Completes research paper on etilogy, evaluation, and treatment of sport injury; responds appropriately when assessing and treating an injury
In mock scenario can evaluate and treat injuries appropriately
Can develop a fitness program for a specfic population including appropriate modifications for a variety of environmental conditions
2 Students demonstrate these skills in a laboratory setting. Graded via checklist with a specified minimum competency level.
Competence measured by assessment on an anatomical model, quality of presentation and response of a live scenario based on pre-determined objectives
3 Students teach moving in open space and closed space. Discuss the injuries associated with various sports and movements. Examine the joints using computer technology. Assess through hands on evaluation of joint assessment.
4 Students are taught how to fall and how to analyze a fall. observed and evaluated in practical experiences in the guidance of exercise and movement.
5 Students understand the relationships among muscle force production, location of muscle attachments, net torque, and potential for injury to poorly stabilized structures. (i.e., in lifting, various exercises like double leg lifts, etc.). Students become aware of common injuries to joints. Practical experience calculating force demands for a group of muscles given a particular movement task, specific body parameters, etc.
6 Students learn principles of effective absorption and application of forces.
7 Students learn the movement obstacles that face individuals with disabilities and how to appropriately facilitate these individuals in the acquisition of motor skills. select disabling condition and create and teach a lesson that would be appropriate to that population to other classmates and individuals with disabilities
8 Students identify individuals at risk and why they are at risk. Written tests and practical experience all students to apply general safety knowledge related to disabilities
9 Students learn legal liability as it relates to injury prevention, proper use of equipment, principles of safe exercising (positions, duration's, etc), mechanics in sport/movement technique, and supervision of students in exercise and movement activities. Utilize a case study approach to legal liability and negligence in which students analyze behaviors that are appropriate and those, which would no doubt result in a breach safety on the part of the teacher.
10 Students organize large groups in exercise/movement in order to avoid injury.
11 K126 (Aquatics) demonstrate a cognitive knowledge of safety skills, strokes, springboard diving progressions, synchronized hydrodynamics, teaching progressions and competitive aspects of aquatics by passing written examination(s) covering the material in the course; (St
12 course lectures written examinations
13 Students understand safe practice and proper techniques to apply to various weight training programs. Students emonstrate knowledge in developing individual program designs, including safe practice in various movement activities.
14 Students set boundaries and different activity levels for children.
15 Students need to be aware as teachers of the different weather conditions for any outdoor activity. Students need to check climbing ropes before using belaying with them. Students learn how to wear safety harnesses for climbing and repelling.
16 Students identify safety considerations for each unit. Written and placed in each unit plan
17 Students examine the skills of rolling, balance, and weight transfer on the floor and with equipment. Safety, and safety training is examined from a pedagogical perspective. Assessment takes place during formal observation of lessons with children.
18 Students demonstrate appropriate lifts and transfers for individuals with disabilities.
19 Students learn CPRFPR & FA and Lifeguarding.
