Upper Division Learning Objective 8

Examples of Assessing Student Achievement of Learning Objectives in the Major.

Each campus intends to develop its own assessment plan. We expect that each campus will enumerate the learning opportunities it provides for students to achieve the learning objectives. Each campus will also identify outcome(s) that reflect student achievement in a particular learning objective. We expect both the opportunities and outcomes to vary from campus to campus reflecting the unique programmatic directions of each campus.

To assist campuses in the task of developing an assessment plan, we offer three examples for each of the core learning objectives. Each example includes: (1) statements of specific instructional learning outcomes that reflect a competency inherent in the learning objective and (2) the achieved results of the outcome (indicators) that can be submitted to document objective attainment.

As campuses develop assessment plans, additional examples may be added to provide guidance to others. It is not intended that any or all of these sample outcomes and indicators need to be demonstrated by any particular student. Each campus profile of outcomes and indicators will be unique, as will that of each student.

All students completing the upper division Kinesiology degree program should:

be able to apply critical thinking, writing, reading, oral communication, quantitative and qualitative analysis, and information management skills to movement-related questions.

 Sample Outcomes

 Sample Indicators

1 Use the skills inherent in Learning Objective 8 skills in a variety of formats to demonstrate the ability to apply biomechanical principles to assess the quality and efficiency of performance. Present a filmed performance of a motor skill. Discuss orally the principles used to assess efficiency of that performance, including such factors as use of internal and external forces, relationship among body segments, and recommendations to improve efficiency.
2 Use the skills inherent in Learning Objective 8 skills in a variety of formats to demonstrate the ability to develop, critique and/or modify exercise programs applying appropriate principles to a variety of populations and exercise settings. Prepare a case study that includes a critical analysis of an existing training program. Oral and written presentation of results.
3 Use the skills inherent in Learning Objective 8 skills in a variety of formats to demonstrate the ability to conduct an ethnographic analysis of a physical activity. Prepare an ethnographic report based upon observation, interview, and historical analysis of a selected cultural phenomenon associated with physical activity.
