Foundation Competency 3

Students entering the upper division Kinesiology degree program should:

demonstrate critical thinking, writing, reading, oral communication, quantitative and qualitative analysis, and information management skills.

   

 Requirements

   1 Students must meet the university requirement for the Math placement test. Verify satisfaction of the requirement.
   2 Students must meet the university requirement for the English placement test. Verify satisfaction of the requirement.
   3 Students must take GE/lower division course work identified by the department. Verification by course work, portfolio, transcripts, projects.

 Example  1 Demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of A.P.A. style. Provide written assignments, exams, and literature summaries utlizing APA style.
 Example  2 Present in oral form constructs from the materials provided and information learned in class. Lectures shared with instructor or individual class presentations.
 Example  3 Analyze case studies, participate in oral practical exams, evaluate scenarios. Performance graded based on competency checklist as activity is completed.

   1 Students read critically and know how to use A.P.A. style . written assignments, exams, oral discussion.
   2 Faculty present a model to students have them interpret the model then provide rationale for supporting the model or refuting the model. (ie assessment model in physical education).
   3 Faculty provide opportunities for students to present in oral form constructs from the materials learned in class. Shared lectures or class presentations.
   4 Students complete assignments dealing with case studies, oral practical exams., scenarios Instructor grades performance based on competency checklist as scenario is completed.
   5 Faculty will discuss with class several research problems. Students would need to determine the most appropriate research techniques (quantitative or qualitative) for exploring the research question.
   6 Students demonstrate management skills in PE or fitness. Actually having to teach and incorporate the concepts of moving equipment and people as management.
   7 Students compile examples of these competencies in a portfolio. Use checklist to evaluate.
   8 Students videotape a 15-minute discussion between you and a friend focusing on current events.  
   9 Students read 10 newspaper or magazine articles on a selected topic and pick out main themes that are common across most of the articles.
