A little about Jeff...

My interest in fish ecology stems from my love of fishing. As a teen in San Diego, I spent most of my free time fishing the local kelp beds and offshore waters and writing fishing reports for a local website. Looking toward my future, I decided that I better make sure there would still be enough fish around to catch when I retire, so I chose to pursue marine biology.

I received my bachelor’s degree in Aquatic Biology from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2004. After graduation I spent a summer in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, assisting with a study on density-dependent mortality in bluehead wrasse (Thalassoma bifasciatum), where my interests in diving and underwater research really took hold. I returned to Santa Barbara and spent the next four years at the Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO) monitoring fish recruitment in the northern Channel Islands. During this time I also put my fishing skills to use, helping to collect adult fishes for several different projects.

As a student in the Joint Doctoral Program in Ecology, my dissertation will concern the various processes that structure fish populations, focusing on the efficacy of marine protected areas through empirical and modeling approaches.  I still spend a lot of my free time fishing and spearfishing, though I also try to fit in some snowboarding, softball, and beach volleyball now and then!
