A little about Dana...

I grew up in California, so I was never too far from the beach. I have always been in love with nature, especially with the ocean. It was an easy decision to study marine biology at U.C. Santa Cruz as an undergraduate. During my time at UCSC, I swam on the collegiate team for all four years and completed a study abroad program in Costa Rica. I was exposed to a variety of topics in biology, but was not sure what I specifically wanted to study. After graduation, I volunteered for the Hawksbill Sea Turtle Monitoring Project on the Big Island of Hawaii. This furthered my desire to attend graduate school and study population ecology in the marine environment.

During my time at SDSU, I plan to further my understanding of marine population ecology, as well as learn techniques that can be applied to other systems. I am interested in factors influencing the settlement and recruitment of fishes and invertebrates, and my thesis concerns the role of giant kelp forests in filtering or otherwise influencing settlement of invertebrate larvae that pass through them. Besides being a biology nerd, my favorite things to do include swimming, SCUBA diving, hiking, cooking (and eating!), reading, music, and yoga.
