[Levi Lewis] A little about Andres... Throughout my childhood, I grew up in various locations within and outside the U.S. Thankfully, I have always managed to reside along the coastline, which has allowed me to stay close to one of the greatest influences in my life, the ocean. After I graduated from high school here in San Diego, I continued my undergraduate studies at SDSU. My original inspiration to be involved in marine science came from working at the Hubbs Sea World Research Institute. I worked in various aspects of aquaculture, including the white seabass restocking program and the yellowtail breeding project. After working in the applied aspects of marine biology, I investigated opportunities to work at SDSU. As a lab assistant for Dr. Matt Edwards, a kelp ecology professor at SDSU, I was introduced to a deeper understanding of the ecological side of our local marine life. While at SDSU, I was also became exposed to field experimental ecology while interacting with his graduate students and working with other professors, including Dr. Todd Anderson. The focus of my thesis research is to investigate how habitat fragmentation in giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) forests may influence recruitment and the abundance of older juvenile and adult temperate reef fishes. Several studies have documented close associations between reef fishes and the giant kelp, particularly for young recruits, but much less is known about recruitment and the abundance of older life stages of fishes that may be influenced by fragmentation and reduction of kelp resulting from various disturbances.
