[Levi Lewis] A little about Kevin... I grew up on a ranch in a small coastal town north of San Francisco called Bolinas (known by many as the town that removes all signs leading into it). I have always been interested in the ocean, spending much of my youth at the beach surfing or exploring tidepools. After finishing high school, I attended UC Santa Cruz, majoring in biology and environmental studies and earning a B.A. in 2004. During my time there, I became very interested in kelp forests and the fishes that reside there. One course, Kelp Forest Ecology, especially spurred my interest; some time was spent in the classroom but a majority of the time was spent in the waters off Hopkins Marine Station in Monterey, California learning sampling techniques and conducting group research projects. My group examined the distribution of kelp greenling (Hexagrammos decagrammus) in the HMS marine reserve. Both during school and after graduation, I woked on the Groundfish Oceanography Team for the National Marine Fisheries Service in Santa Cruz. I aged juvenile rockfish using otoliths and was in charge of fish dissection in the analysis of age and sex in rockfish populations. I also assisted with monthly troll and long-line cruises for specimen collection, and I led a study on recapture rates of tagged gopher rockfish (Sebastes carnatus). Currently I’m a master’s student in the Ecology program at SDSU. My thesis project concerns the effects of disturbance and recovery of kelp forests on recruitment and the abundance of juvenile and adult fishes. This research is being conducted at Santa Catalina Island, based from the Wrigley Marine Science Center. Contact Kevin: Email: kevincoconnor@hotmail.com
