A little about Josh...

My parents had me snorkeling over a coral reef in the Florida Keys at age 2 and I’ve been hooked ever since. I have been attracted to natural systems for as long as I can remember, and as a child my bedtime stories were often Zoobooks. Oceans have been of particular interest to me because of my early exposure to the fascinating creatures I encountered growing up near the beach in Florida.

When I began my undergraduate studies at Florida State University (FSU), I knew I wanted to study biology and work in marine systems, but I was unsure what particular field most interested me. During my undergraduate career, I spent a semester abroad at James Cook University in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. While there I took courses that focused heavily on local organisms and their interactions with each other and the environment. This experience helped me realize my interests lie in ecology, and on my return to FSU I was accepted into the Certificate Program in Marine Resource Ecology. Through that program, I gained valuable research experience and was able to hone my interests further to focus on the ecology of fishes.

Now I am a master's student at San Diego State University in the Fish Ecology Lab of Dr. Todd Anderson. I am thoroughly enjoying the change of scenery brought about by my move to the west coast. My hobbies include but are not limited to  swimming, cycling, running, rock climbing, hiking, photography, good food, good beer, good wine, and of course long walks on the beach.

While at SDSU, I will continue to expand my knowledge in marine ecology. My research interests concern coastal marine habitats, and I have developed a thesis project to examine the consequences of non-consumptive predation threat to a macrophyte-associated fish.
