690: Procedures of Investigation and
Report (3 units)
Course
Description
Research methods in
education. Location, selection,
and analysis of professional literature.
Methods of investigation, data analysis, and reporting. Required of all applicants for advanced
degrees in education. Education 690 provides students with opportunities to
acquire knowledge and skills in the evaluation, use, and production of
educational and behavioral research.
The primary purpose of the Course is to provide special educators with
the tools needed to access, evaluate, and apply research findings to their professional
practice. In addition, students
will learn basic principles for the design and implementation of the research
activities to be carried out as part of their master's degree experience. This
special section for students in Special Education includes the areas typically
covered in a graduate class in educational research as well as topics related
to the study of individuals with exceptionalities. For example, particular attention is given to sampling,
design, and analysis procedures used with small, diverse populations and to
design, implementation, and data analysis for single subject research studies.

Education
795A/795B (ED795A/ED795B): Seminar (3 units)
Course
Description
An intensive study in selected areas of education
culminating in a written project. Limited to students following Plan B for the
Master of Arts degree in Education. At San Diego State University, requirements
for the Master of Arts degree in Education include preparing either a thesis
(ED 799) or two seminar papers (ED 795A and ED 795B). In ED 795A, students
identify an area of interest, conduct a thorough review of the literature, and
design a research study addressing a question or problem. In ED 795B, the
research plan is refined, finalized, and implemented; data are collected and
analyzed; results are incorporated into a research report written in APA
journal article format. The final product of ED 795A is a seminar paper which
includes the statement of a research problem, a review of the literature on
this specific topic area, and a plan for conducting a research study in this
area. The final product of ED 795B is a report of the research conducted. This
report is prepared in a format suitable for submission to an appropriate
journal. Approximately 10-20% of students submit their ED 795B reports to
journals.
Special Education 525
(SPED525): Characteristics and Education of Students with
Moderate/Severe Disabilities (3 units)
Course Description
Historical and philosophical perspectives of programs
related to students with moderate/severe disabilities. Research on educational
programs, curricular approaches, and characteristics with an emphasis on
services in the context of school reform.
Special Education 526 (SPED 526):
Course
Description
SPED 526 addresses the
characteristics, needs and supports of persons with physical disabilities,
health and sensory impairments, chronic illness and infectious disease,
including neuromotor, degenerative, orthopedic, and musculoskeletal
disabilities. Emphasis is placed developing the understanding, skills and
competencies required to develop a supportive educational and learning
environment, deliver effective instruction and maximize student performance.
Students are introduced to the basic anatomy, neuroanatomy, and physiology of
physical, sensory, and health impairments and infectious disease. Students will
be required to develop hands on skills and be exposed to ethical and legal
issues involving students with physical, sensory, and health impairments and
infectious disease. Students are expected to develop an understanding of their
roles and responsibilities as educators in collaboration with other team
members including the child, family, nurses, physicians therapists and other
support personnel. Finally, students are expected to in a sensitive and caring
manner understand how to respond to and manage conditions, situations and
circumstances involving the health of students with physical, health, and
sensory impairments and infectious disease within the ethical, administrative
and legal boundaries of their professional role, responsibilities, and position.
Special
Education 654 (SPED 654):
Course Description
Designing and adapting curriculum to
promote generalization of skills of individuals with moderate/severe
disabilities for involvement across settings with a focus on community
activities and organizations.
Special Education 681B
(SPED681B): Advanced Studies in Special Education Moderate/Severe
Disabilities and Early Childhood (3 units)
Course Description
Educational theories, philosophies, research findings,
issues and trends in the area of exceptionality are addressed. Application of
research to solution of educational problems is the focus of the course. This
Course is intended to prepare students to successfully complete the
comprehensive exam and the Masters project (ED795A/ED795B).
