How-to Essay

 

Objective

Compose an original technical document: a Òhow-toÓ guide, 250 to 500 words, clearly defining the steps in a process. Unlike a typical essay, with a set number of paragraphs, this guide will have several sections (each preceded by a clear heading in boldface). Some of the sections (such as "Materials Needed" or "Steps in the Process") will involve a list format.

 

Purpose

To strengthen the skills of clear writing by practicing writing at its most basic level:  the transmission of information. 

 

Sections of the "How To" Guide

  1. Introduction: explain the importance of the skill.  Explain why users should know how to do what you are about to explain
  2. Materials needed.  List format, with bullet points be very specific here:  donÕt leave anything out!
  3. The process.  Describes a step-by step process
    • FirstÉNextÉThenÉ
    • or: Step 1; Step 2; Step 3 (in listed form)
  4. Helpful hints:  Offers tips, and anticipates potential problems.
  5. Final note: provides encouragement for new learners, and sends them on their way towards success.
