Highlights:
Wake up at 4:30 to find we are in the middle of a cloud. Back
to sleep. The clouds still haven't lifted by 8:00 and we decide to
abandon the peak attempt on Copper. Instead, we have a relatively
laid-back morning with knot lessons: follow-through figure-8, figure-8 on
a bite, double fisherman, prussic hitch, munter hitch, clove hitch, bowline,
girth hitch. Autobiography from Elena over lunch, then pack up camp.
After some navigational debate, we head over Copper Chute. Our
first experience on talus and scree is intense but Matt and Jeff get us through
safely. It begins to rain as we descend the other side. The site
where we camp is fairly uneven so we each put up solo tarps, with an eye
on the weather. We have plenty of time for hanging out, watching the
moon rise and trying to keep warm. Matt gives a naturalist lesson about
mountain goats, Wen tells us about marmots and Jenn reads about hypothermia.
We briefly discuss the plan for the next day (crossing over the ridge
below the Finger to camp at the Grandstand) before heading to bed.
