Highlights:
6:45 wake-up, breakfast is muslix (which Matt teaches us is yummy with
cocoa instead of milk!)
Medic and naturalist lessons - Jimmy teaches us about tracheotomies,
Jenn reads about the general history of the Cascades. We introduce
each other, relating all the info we were supposed to get in the van from
the airport. Memorable quote (Mac via Jimmy): "Yes, yes, no, but yes."
Jeff gives a route area description for the day. The plan is
to hike a little over three miles, with an elevation gain of 1800 feet, on
an unmaintained trail. We are almost ready to get going around 11ish,
and Jeff shares the sparrow story: 'It's in your hands'. Finally hit
the trail at 11:30 after a shakey start on an inclined log bridge. The
first mile is slow-going as we discover that 'unmaintained' means lots of
fallen trees to climb over. Steady climbing in shady woods, opening
to amazing views that almost make up for the weight of the packs and the
steepness of the trail. We stop for lunch and blister checks. Lunch:
bickies, PB&J and cream cheese. Autobiography from Wen. Afternoon
brings steep switchbacks, more amazing views and then tons of mosquitoes.
Mark is concerned about how much his knee is bothering him when we
go downhill. We pass our original destination campsite to bushwhack
down closer to the lake. Elena steps into a bee's nest and we are all
driven crazy by the mosquitoes. Wen is pushed to her limit. We
finally get to camp around 7:00 and set up in the fading twilight. We
are all very happy to sit down to a yummy dinner of lentil soup and quesadillas.
In evening circle, Wen talks to us about her day and what we can do
to help. Bed around 11.
Quote of the day: (Jimmy to Mac) "C'mon man, leave me alone! I
made you quesadillas!"
