Brief History

On February 4, 1924, at the direction of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the Founding Father of the Republic of China, the National Higher Normal College, Kwangtung Provincial Law College, and Kwangtung Provincial Agricultural Technical School were incorporated into the National Kwangtung University. After the demise of Dr. Sun, to commemorate his contribution to the Republic, the University was renamed the National Sun Yat-sen University, and its campus site relocated in Shin-p'ai, Canton. Subsequently, the Colleges of Arts, Science, Law, Engineering, Medicine, Agriculture, the Teacher's College, and a graduate institute were set up. In 1980, the University was re-established in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

Campus Location

Bounded on the east by a slow rising hill, the Longevity Hill, and facing west to the beautiful Hsitzu Bay and the Taiwan Strait, National Sun Yat-sen University has a campus that is quite unique in Taiwan, with the Port of Kaohsiung lying to the south and Mount Chai rising to the north. Moreover, the campus is located at a convenient distance from the bustling Kaohsiung City and the busy Kaohsiung International Airport.

Academic Calendar

The university operates on a semester system, which includes the Fall and Spring semesters. The Fall semester begins in mid-September and ends in late-January. The Spring semester begins in mid-February and ends in late-June.

Academic Programs

NSYSU places equal emphasis on the development of both graduate and undergraduate programs. The University consists of six colleges, including the colleges of Liberal Arts, Sciences, Engineering, Management, Social Sciences, and Marine Sciences, with 18 undergraduate, 35 masters, and 24 doctoral programs.

Student Enrollment

Enrollments in fall 2003 totaled 9542 students with graduate students comprising about 53% of the student body.

Faculty Profile

There are 444 full-time faculty members with 94% holding doctoral degree. The faculty to student ratio is approximately 1 to 21 (1 faculty member per 21 students).

Guide for International Exchange Students
1. Residence

International students staying in Taiwan for more than six months will have to apply for an Alien Resident Certificate. Each student will need to take the original and one copy each of passport, student ID and two 2"¡Ñ2" photos to the Bureau of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kaohsiung Office to apply for resident visa. The visa will be issued within 10 days. The application fee for the resident visa is NT$1,800. Upon receiving the resident visa, the student will then need to apply for the Alien Resident Certificate in the Foreign Affairs Division of the Kaohsiung City Police Headquarters within 15 days. An applicant needs to:

(1) Fill out a copy of Multiple-purpose Application Form for Foreign Residents and attach four photos (1"¡Ñ1.5");
(2) Submit the original passport with resident visa;
(3) Submit the original and a copy of student ID; and
(4) An application fee of NT$1,000.

International students staying in Taiwan for less than six months do not need to apply for an Alien Resident Certificate. With a visitor visa, each student may stay for sixty days and apply at the Foreign Affairs Division of Kaohsiung Police Headquarters for a maximum of two extensions, each for sixty days. The applicants shall apply for extension within ten days prior to the expiration of a visitor visa. An applicant needs to:

(1) Fill out a copy of Multiple-purpose Application Form for Foreign Residents;
(2) Submit the original and a copy of passport; and
(3) Submit the original and a copy of student ID.

2. Immigration

International students with the Alien Resident Certificate should fill out a copy of the Multiple-purpose Application Form for Foreign Residents for re-entry permission before leaving the country. The student should take this form to the Foreign Affairs Division of the Kaohsiung Police Headquarters. Procedures are as followed:

(1) Submit the application form; and
(2) Submit passport and Alien Resident Certificate for checking.

3. Living Cost

The typical estimated budget for a student per semester is approximately NT$50,000; this includes room and board, transportation, academic and personal expenses.

4. Accommodation

Foreign students are eligible to apply for the student dormitory, and the deadline for application is May 31 (fall semester) or November 30 (spring semester). A shared room of four students is NT$1201~1,643 for each student per month. Students need to pay the full fee along with NT$1,000 damage deposit upon registration. The deposit will be returned when students check out of the dormitory.

5. Food Services

Cafeterias in the student dorms offer Chinese food. Students can buy lunch boxes in the grocery store at a reasonable price. Students will find both Chinese and Western-style restaurants in the Student Activities Center.

6. Transportation

Motorcycles are the most common commuting tools. Motorists, according to the traffic rules, need to pay a fine of NT$500 if they do not wear a helmet. Bus is also a convenient commuting tool.The ticket fee for the bus is NT$12. Bus No.1 runs to and from the University and the Railway Station. The bus stop is right in front of the university entrance. The Airport Shuttle runs to and from the Railway Station and the Kaohsiung Airport every 15 minutes. Students can take the Airport Shuttle from the Kaohsiung Airport to the Railway Station and transfer to Bus No.1 to the University.

7. Insurance

New students are required to provide a copy of the proof of medical insurance for the first five months. According to the National Health Insurance Law, all foreigner residing in Taiwan for more than four months, and holding an Alien Resident Certificate, are required to join the National Health Insurance Program. The premium is NT$604 per month. The premium is subject to change.

8. Health Care

The Health Center consists of two units, the Family Medicine Clinic and the Dental Clinic. You don't need to pay the registration fee by showing valid student ID. Besides, the Dental Clinic gives 15% discount for those students who are not yet eligible to join the national health insurance program.

9. Sports Facilities and Recreation

The University provides out-door sport facilities, including a track and field stadium, a swimming pool, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, a softball field and a skating rink. The gymnasium contains a table-tennis room, a dancing room, badminton courts, basketball courts and a weight training room. Facilities are opened to every student with a valid student ID. Students have to sign- in at the Sports Equipment Room on the first floor before using the facilities. Students using the swimming pool and the tennis court have to first get a ticket and show valid student ID.

10. The Student Union

The Student Union provides all students with clubs and activities. There are currently 84 student organizations, including sports. Some of them are related to culture, such as karate, tai chi(chuan), Chinese medicine, Chinese Calligraphy, Chinese traditional music, aboriginal culture, etc.

11. Computer Center and Facilities

The Computer Center, containing 3 PC rooms, a Mac room, and one workstation room for a total of more than 200 consoles /terminals equipped with up-to-date software/ network connection, is open to students.

12. Library

The University Library currently holds 543,054 volumes (including 240,945 volumes of foreign books), 5,000 titles of serials subscription, 146,554 pieces of microfilm research texts. Students may borrow books with valid student IDs for a period of 30 days. NT$5 fine per day will be charged for overdue books.
