History
The idea for an Athlete Retirement Institute began when Scott Tinley, a former professional triathlete, was doing graduate research during the late 1990's. Working closely with Gene Lamke, Chair of the Department of Recreation and Tourism, and other SDSU faculty, there was often the question of, "Why is there not a central location, real or virtual, that a retiring player in the need of assistance can go to access information?"
The catalyst for embarking on this project came with the advent of the SDSU MBA in Sports Management Program at SDSU which enrolled its first cohort in January, 2005. The support of Dean Gail Naughton (College of Business Administration) and Dean Joyce Gattas (College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts); College of Business Administration Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Sports MBA Professor Jim Lackritz; and College of Business Administration Director of Executive and Special Programs, Karen Courtney was vital to the Institutes development.
In 2008, the IART is pleased to partner with California University of Pennsylvania’s MS in Sports Management Studies program. Their valued partnership has been integral to the planning and executing of the 2009 IART Conference.
