Meeting in AH-1120 at 1 p.m.
John Ross, Chair
Deep Freeze
John Ross stated Celia Chavez is handling the distribution of the Deep Freeze licenses
for the current contract. Since the contract runs until June 30th, all areas will
need their quantity needs for next year to Diana Osborn by April 1, 2008 for the renewal
negotiations.
X-Win32
John announced that Academic Affairs would be renewing the X-Win32 contract by
February. Everyone should be using a temporary license key right now, as the contact
expired last month. He mentioned that Merka Phoenix had found some alternatives to
X-Win32 that MWSSLS may look into this semester.
Secure E-Mail
According to Rich Pickett, the campus is moving ahead on converting to using secure E-Mail
protocols. In the initial phase the campus will be securing the transmission of login IDs,
passwords and e-mail messages between the E-Mail clients (Eudora, etc.) and the mail servers.
It only takes a few minutes to configure your E-Mail client (Eudora, Thunderbird, Outlook,
Entourage, etc.) to take advantage of this increased security. You will need to make
these changes to both your on-campus and off-campus E-Mail clients.
These changes do not affect Webmail access. The TNS Help Desk has posted useful guides
to lead users through the process for mail.SDSU.edu accounts. These documents can be
found at: http://tns.sdsu.edu/email.htm#SetSSL.
After the following dates, only secure transmissions with e-mail servers will be permitted
through the campus firewalls.
- Mail.SDSU.edu - Feb. 29, 2008
- ROHAN, Sciences, Kahuna and auxiliary organization servers - March 30, 2008
- All other campus e-mail servers - April 30, 2008
Discussion ensued on E-Mail clients and the conversion of E-Mail messages from different
clients.
Meeting Maker
There will be a rollout of Meeting Maker version 8.6.5 in February, however logistics
are still being discussed by UCO. Meanwhile, UCO is merging their 3 databases to reduce
backup time and alleviate the number of disconnects users are experiencing.
Public PCs
Academic Affairs will be requesting a re-count of Public PCs soon per John Ross.
ITS Update
Changes in personnel this spring include the leaving of Wendy Shapiro and Heidi Rubio,
as well as the retirement of Rob Drake by summer were announced by Jim Julius.
Increased usage of the Captivate and Clickers workshops was announced, as Jim
distributed information on upcoming ITS spring workshops. The new offerings
will include MS Office 2007, while this is the last semester for MS Office
2003 workshops. Kimpozer has replaced Front Page as the web development tool
for the basic web workshop. To register for the workshops, go to
http://its.sdsu.edu/~bats/register.
To see detailed descriptions and workshop handouts, go to
http://its.sdsu.edu/~bats/. Also distributed was a schedule of the Smart Classroom
Workshops A and B for January.
During winter break, ITS is involved with several Smart Classroom upgrades
(LS-244 is next up). There will also be 4 new rooms developed this summer in
the old Student Health building across from the Gateway building. ITS is continuing
to use as their standard a set of Mac Minis for the podium platforms.
Other ITS projects include continued work on the Summer Initiative to offer several
fully online GE courses, the Course Design Institute which assists faculty seeking
to increase online learning in their courses, and the Student Research Symposium.
