Border Firewall - John Ross
The border firewall activation went well according to Academic Affairs. John Ross and John Denune are working on the
remaining tasks: getting official approval for all exemptions; running fresh Foundstone scans of exempted systems and
making sure that vulnerabilities are addressed; and creating a communication plan for systems that send password and
account information in cleartext (ftp, Apple file protocol, etc.). A longer-term goal is to review "provisional"
approvals to see which exemptions could be eliminated by moving applications to other servers, or applying a
different technology
John Ross indicated that no expedited requests are being done currently. Rather modifications
and deletions can be handled via email to firewall@sdsu.edu. The original database was just
for the activation and was never intended as a full blown WO system. He is forwarding additions
to existing systems to John Denune. John Ross has a 24 hour turnaround on the items he sends
to John Denune, while John Denune stated his turnaround is 5 to 10 working days unless its an
emergency. A reminder: All firewall rules are IP based, so please keep that in mind when sending
in changes.
Other IT News - Felecia Vlahos
Felecia Vlahos mentioned her recent meeting with the IT auditors, as their recommendation is for a
single email server on each campus. While they could understand separating student from faculty/staff
mail services, the auditors were amazed at the proliferation of email servers at SDSU. Felecia also
stated that the IT Managers committee has an email and a calendaring subcommittee looking at
replacements for Eudora and Meeting Maker.
Felecia announced Counter Spy Training on March 21st from 8 to 3 p.m. in Ext. Studies 207.

Kyoto Laureate Symposium
This Summer is shaping up to see ITS doing upgrades for some Classic Smart classrooms, working on
a 150 seat video conferencing room in Adams Humanities, developing a new Smart Classroom in P 144,
and (potentially) developing Smart classrooms at College Square (the second floor above the Lindo
Paseo Starbucks). ITS is also involved with the pICT Fellowship summer institute to help faculty
redesign courses to integrate more online activity.
ATI - Jim Julius
The Accessible Technology Initiative has three parts: web
accessibility, instructional materials access, and procurement. There is a new tool on campus for
web accessibility called Hi Software and training is included. The tool includes a server-based
component for scanning sites for accessibility (AccMonitor) as well as tools for developers to
use when creating, testing, and updating websites (AccVerify and AccRepair). We also have a tool
called HiCaption to assist with captioning of web-based video. Cyndi Chie is organizing in-person
training on these products for March 19th and 20th and will be sending out notices soon.
Next IACC meeting - April 12, 2007 in AH-1120.
Email and Meeting Maker notices will be sent.
PLEASE NOTE: The statements found on the IACC Home Page
are for informational purposes only. While every effort is made to ensure
that this information is up to date and accurate, official information can
be found in the University publications.
