Linux

I want to learn how the mechanisms below the surface of the Internet work, which to me means Unix. With Linux, I don't have to convince anybody they should buy me a system for me to learn system administration on.

A free OS is a 2-edged sword. Affordability is not an issue, but nobody can make a living giving good user support, so the only support you're going to find is volunteer. You're going to have to get down and beat your head against the realities of how the software works on the hardware. Plan on spending time instead of money.

I first installed Linux on a 486DX100 in the summer of 1997. I've installed dozens of times, each time getting closer to what I wanted. I have Linux running on machines ranging from a 386DX40 (8 MB RAM) to a 400 MHz AMD K6-2 (96 MB RAM on 100 MHz bus). I am currently running Debian 2.1 on a couple of machines, Linux Router Project 2.9.3 on a couple, and I just put SuSE 6.1 (lite) on my new Sager 9820 (until I can get Debian 2.2).

A while back I spent a lot of time and effort learning some things about how to run Netscape with Debian 2.0 .

I'd consider The Linux Documentation Project the best single Linux resource on the net.

K-PLUG, our local user group, also has a nice page.
