welcome to jms 550.
JMS 550 provides an opportunity for journalism seniors and graduate students to showcase and enhance their reporting skills while utilizing an array of multimedia and Web 2.0 technologies. The emphasis of the course is on strengthening students’ abilities to identify and research issues, gather information and effectively communicate their findings across media platforms. The course is also designed to promote learning through working in teams, participation in online and in-class discussions, apprenticeships and mentoring. Students will use photos, sound and video platforms to tell their stories. Each student will produce and edit one practice podcast, slideshow and video package, as well as one slideshow and video package that will be published on the JMS Reports Web site. In addition, each student will produce a Web extra for the JMS Reports site, which can be in multimedia or text form. Every student also is responsible for adding content, headlines, text intros on the JMS Reports Web site and contributing to the overall look of the site. Web editors will be appointed to do the actual content posting. Guidelines and grading rubrics for the projects will be discussed later in the class. While this course incorporates the principles of convergence and uses various “new” digital media, traditional journalistic ethics and values remain the foundation of the class. Relevant reading materials will be assigned and posted in the Google group. All written copy must be turned in using Google Docs. The desired learning outcomes of JMS 550 are for students to:(1) Establish and maintain a journalistic Web presence.
(2) Generate original, topical story ideas relevant to the greater San Diego community.
(3) Utilize Web 2.0 capabilities to collaborate on projects, research stories and analyze media convergence.
