Biography

Yoshiko Higurashi is Professor of Japanese and the Director of the Japanese Language Program in the Department of Linguistics and Asian/Middle Eastern Languages at San Diego State University (SDSU). She received her B.A. in English from Waseda University (Tokyo) in 1975, her M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Oregon in 1977, and her Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1982. She joined the faculty at SDSU in 1983 after three years as an Assistant Professor at the University of the Pacific.

With the publication of Volume 3 of Elementary Functional Japanese in March 2000, she became the world's only single author who has ever written textbooks for college students at all three levels (elementary, intermediate, advanced) in any language.

She has been directing the Japanese Language Program since 1983 and created a minor and a major in Japanese. She has also been directing the National Faculty Development Institute "Incorporating Japanese Studies into the Undergraduate Curriculum" known as the Japan Studies Institute sponsored by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) every summer since 2006.

Professor Higurashi's research is in linguistics, speech pathology, second language pedagogy, and intercultural communication.
