Below you will find a brief explanation of each color, the pros and cons of that color, and the types of creatures you will find linked to those colors. Each elemental color is extremely powerful and has pros and cons of its own. At the bottom of the page you will find several official and supplemental resources to refine your learning. Elements, in a nutshell, are what drive the game. The elements in Magic define lands, creatures, spells, and serve to paint the a visual picture of the world the game creates. As you begin your journey into the game, knowing the background of each element will help you better understand the game as a whole. Many times players will play a color OR several colors that match their personality. There are five mail elements that serve as the framework of the game:
BLUE, RED, GREEN, WHITE, BLACK.
BLUE: Blue is defined largely by creatures of wind and water. Creature types include: Wizards, merfolk, fish, drakes, avens, pirates, spellshapers, and thieves. Generally, creatures and spells of the blue type represent extreme intellect, coolness, collectiveness, mischief, and control. Players who incorporate blue elements into their deck often find themselves controlling the other player. With such power, it is possible to prevent the other player from playing creatures and spells that have the ability to harm you. The power to control gives you the opportunity to shut down any progressive strategy the other player may have. The only down side to playing blue is the fact that it may take significantly longer to get a combination that you need to win.
RED: Red is the color of passion, fire, mountains, rage, power, erruption, explosion, and domination. Creature types include: Barbarians, goblins, titans, kavu, warriors, and dragons. Overall, the red attibute is fast, relentless, and destructive. Typically players who chose to incorporate a red-based deck will find that their game becomes more fast-pased. Red creatures and spells are a quick and effective way to take another player down. The power of red is best defined by the will to be quick and relentess against all others that stands in its way.
GREEN: Green is best defined by the lush forests of the land. Creatures of the forest include: Treefolk, elves, beasts, shamans, explorers, archers, centaurs, snakes, mongeese, elephants, spiders, and worms. Creatures and spells of the forest represent symbiosis and cooperation. Creatures draw their energy from the land and vice versa. Creatures also give eachother energy. Green represent growth, biology, vegetation, life, energy, and all things natural. Typical players who incorporate the green element into their game find themselves with many creatures small and big with the ability to support eachother and produce energy and strength.
WHITE: White is the color of the plains and of human society. White creatures include: Human soldiers, clerics, angels, lions, livestock, nomads and spirits. White is characterized best by structure, order, protection, and society, will, spirituality, and the heavens. White is the element in the game that comes closest to mirroring human society and the influence of religion. Players who structure their game around the white element will find that they are working with a functional deck that revolves around leveling the playing field and fairness.
BLACK: Black is the color of the swamplands, the dark, and the underworld. Black creatures include: Zombies, demons, imps, witches, insects, rats, gnats, flies, ghosts, rogues, minions, vampires, and any creature possessed with evil. The black element is best represented by greed, corruption, death, sabotage, evil, possession, suicide, and murder. Players who control the black element usually get what they want in the game. They can easily destroy or corrupt someone elses game and make it particulary hard for another player to win.
