Project S.A.L.S.A. : Gene-environment interaction in the development of the metabolic syndrome in high risk Latinos. PI: GA Talavera, JJ McCarthy

The metabolic syndrome, a clustering of dyslipidemia, high blood pressure, obesity and hyperglycemia, is a risk factor for both diabetes and heart disease and has reached epidemic proportions in the U.S.  Latinos are disproportionately affected by this syndrome, where an estimated 32% have the disorder.  The etiology of the metabolic syndrome is believed to be due to a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental triggers such as physical inactivity and high fat diet.  The purpose of our study is to examine specific genetic factors and their interaction with environmental variables in the development of the metabolic syndrome is a high risk population of Mexican Americans in San Diego County.

Colorectal Cancer Screening in Primary Practice. Funded by NCI. PI: GA Talavera

The proposed project, Promoting Colorectal Cancer Screening Among Latinos, is a randomized trial designed to address the social, cultural and system barriers to colorectal cancer screening among Latinos.  Phase 1 of the study will begin with in-depth formative research to examine the knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and practices of Latinos in relation to colorectal cancer (CRC) and colorectal cancer screening.  Based on this formative research Phase 2 will subsequently develop and evaluate two culturally- and linguistically-sensitive interventions designed to promote CRC screening as compared to minimal intervention that approximates “usual care”. The study design is theory driven and will isolate the critical knowledge and behavioral skills necessary to negotiate the health care system for this growing segment of the US population.

Project H.E.A.L.: Health Education and Access for Latinos (HEAL). Funded by OMH. PI: GA Talavera

San Ysidro Health Center’s proposed HEAL project seeks to reduce health disparities in the Latino community by increasing early detection of cardiovascular risk factors and promoting therapeutic lifestyle changes. Specific activities will include: (1) improving Latinos’ awareness of, and access to, health education opportunities; (2) improving Latinos’ knowledge about the targeted diseases; (3) improving Latinos’ utilization of preventive screening/testing; (4) linking underserved Latinos to a “medical home” for ongoing preventive and primary care services and follow-up; and, (5) improving biological indicators.
