Terminology
Thesis
A formal document, frequently accompanied by an oral defense, demonstrating a systematic study of a significant problem or
topic. The thesis is a requirement for all Plan A students.
Thesis 799A Course
A three unit course, constituting full-time enrollment, required for all students involved in the process of writing the
hesis. 799A has no formal instructor or meeting times, and a grade of "Credit" is assigned in this course by the Graduate
Division once the thesis has been published. No theses will be accepted for review or publication unless student is
(or has been previously) enrolled in 799A.
Thesis Committee Form
A formal agreement to serve, signed by all participating members of a student's thesis committee and the department graduate
adviser. The agreement must be filled out completely, all faculty members must be deemed eligible to serve, and any human or
animal research protocols approved by the Graduate Division before a student may enroll in 799A. Students will not be able to
begin this process without first being advanced to candidacy.
Thesis Extension 799B Course
Students who do not complete the master's thesis during the semester they are enrolled in 799A are required to enroll in Thesis
Extension 799B in order to submit their thesis. Students must be enrolled in either 799A or 799B the semester they submit
their thesis to the Graduate Division for review.
Thesis Review
All students who submit a master's thesis must have the document reviewed by the university's Thesis Reviewer. The reviewer's
primary responsibility is to verify that all theses are formatted according to university requirements. The reviewer is
available to meet with students by appointment only, and is not available to meet with students during certain periods of
the academic year.
