Terminology

Lecturer
Non-tenured faculty member.

Letter of Completion
A letter verifying that all degree requirements have been met. This is a standard letter and no special exceptions may be requested regarding the wording of said document. For a list of degree requirements, please consult the Graduate Bulletin.

Official Program of Study (POS)
The Official Program of Study consists of courses a student must complete in order to be awarded a master's degree. The Official POS form is completed in consultation with the department Graduate Adviser and approved by the Graduate Dean. It is a binding document unless the student withdraws from the university.

One-Semester Stop Out
With certain exceptions, matriculated graduate students may stop out of the university one semester during a calendar year and maintain continuing student status.

Petition for Academic Adjustment
This document is used to request an adjustment of specific requirements for the master's degree. Examples of situations that would require this petition are: substitution of non-required courses for core courses, extending the time allowed for completion of a course graded "Incomplete," requesting an excess number of transfer units be allowed to apply to the program of study, using an alternate year's Graduate Bulletin requirements for evaluation purposes.

Petitions
It is the student's right to request reconsideration of a variety of issues arising from their pursuit of a degree. It is the right of the Graduate Dean to approve or deny these requests. Petition procedures can be explained by contacting the Graduate Division.
