Sample Protocols
Below are several sample protocols which have been submitted and approved by the SDSU IRB.
• Preventing Behavior and Health Problems for Foster Teens
Psychology faculty study
submitted to the Full Committee for review. The study includes a vulnerable population, i.e.,
foster children and their guardians are involved in an intervention designed to strengthen the
parenting skills of foster parents and to increase social skills related to preventing health-risking
behaviors for youth in foster homes.
• Is hyperventilation-induced hypocapnia the mechanism responsible for cerebral
deoxygenation during exhaustive exercise? Exercise and Nutritional Sciences student study
submitted for Full Committee review. The study involves the collection of Maximal Aerobic
Power (VO2max) information and the administration of Acetazolamide (Acz), a carbonic anhydrase
inhibitor in order to examine the amount of oxygen available in the brain during maximal exercise.
• Verb Learning in Action! Joint SDSU/UCSD Speech Language and Hearing Sciences
student study submitted for Expedited review. The study includes children participating in non-invasive
experimental procedures routinely employed in clinical practice who are videotaped/audiotaped.
• Biological Field Station and Local Perceptions Towards Primate Conservation
Interdisciplinary student study submitted for Exempt Prospective review. The study includes adults who
fill out a survey about their perceptions, knowledge and attitudes concerning a biological field
station with respect to primate conservation and conservation awareness.
• Examination of the Accuracy of Parental Perceptions of Child Weight Status as
Determined by Body Mass Graduate School of Public Health student study submitted for Exempt Existing
data review. The study involves the analysis of existing data from a childhood obesity prevention
research project.
