Education and Training in the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals
The SDSU Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee is mandated by the federal Laboratory Animal Welfare Act (9 CFR Chapter 1, Subpart C, Section 2.32), the ILAR Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (1996), and the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, to ensure all scientists, research technicians, animals technicians, and other personnel involved in animal care, treatment and use are qualified to perform their duties. To meet the needs of the SDSU Research Community in fulfilling these requirements, the following is available:

Laboratory Personnel:
The Animal Welfare Training module is mandatory for all personnel working under an APF whose research
will be preformed in the laboratory. Contact the IACUC administrative office at
iacuc@mail.sdsu.edu or
(619) 594-0905 for access information. A "refresher" course is required every three years during an ongoing
project. This training consists of:

Field Personnel:
The Field Animal Welfare Training module is mandatory for all personnel working under an APF whose research will

- Euthanasia

Hands On Training
In addition to the web based Animal Welfare Training, hands-on training is required for all personnel who will be
in direct contact with animals. The specific content and degree of detail will vary depending on the knowledge,
previous experience and expertise of the target audience. This training can include but is not limited to:
- Handling/Restraint
- Anesthesia/Analgesia
- Blood Collections (retro-orbital, tail vein)
- Injection Techniques (IP, SC, IV)
- Euthanasia procedures
- Tail Snipping
- Ear Tagging
Included as part of the hands-on training, a vivarium orientation will be given to inform all users of vivarium policies. Keys will be issued at that time. Please contact the Office of Laboratory Animal Care Manager at tslimp@sciences.sdsu.edu or (619) 594-5421 to arrange this training.
Animal Health and Welfare Training Instructions
IMPORTANT: Before training can be accomplished you must call the Institutional Animal Care and Use
Committee (IACUC) office at (619) 594-0905 or
iacuc@mail.sdsu.edu to be added to the appropriate
training sessions on Blackboard.
The following describes the steps required to participate in the on-line Animal Health and Welfare Training Program on Blackboard to satisfy the training requirements of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC):
- Once you have been added to the training session you will be able to log onto the Blackboard system through the WebPortal using your SDSU RedID and password.
- Once you have logged in you will be taken to "My SDSU" page. Click on the next tab at the top of the page named "Courses."
- Under "Courses in which you are participating" click on the training in which you are enrolled.
- If you are laboratory personnel you will be enrolled in "Animal Health and Welfare Training - Lab."
- If you are field personnel you will be enrolled in "Animal Health and Welfare Training - Field."
- Click on "Course Documents" to reveiw the course documents.
- Once all the course documents are reviewed, click on "Assignments" then "Quizzes" and take the quiz for each segment.
- The scores for the quizzes will be automatically sent to an internal database and recorded.
