Financial Support and Fellowships

San Diego State University offers a variety of financial support programs to help graduate students with the costs of graduate study. These programs include state and federal aid programs, as well as University programs that address the unique needs of students across a broad range of economic and academic circumstances. On-campus programs for graduate students include appointments as teaching associates, graduate assistants, research assistants, and student assistants, as well as fee payment assistance, fellowships, scholarships, grants, and forgivable loans. Nominations for most of these awards originate with the chair or director of your department.
Graduate Equity Fellowship
The Graduate Equity Fellowship program provides support for economically disadvantaged graduate students, especially from groups who are underrepresented within their respective disciplines. The application for the Graduate Equity Fellowship can be found here.
Graduate Assistants and Teaching Assistants
Graduate Assistants and Teaching Assistants, frequently referred to as GAs and TAs, participate in the teaching activities of the university through a variety of classroom and research activities that support integral components of the academic curriculum. Nominations for GA and TA positions originate with the chair or adviser of each department. Non Resident Tuition Waivers
The Non-Resident Tuition Waiver Program exempts a limited number of high caliber incoming non-resident and international students from paying the $372-per unit non resident tuition fee. Students receiving this waiver pay the same fees as California resident students. Students must be nominated for the Non-Resident Tuition Waiver by their department.
Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Program
The Sally Casanova California Pre-Doctoral Program is designed to increase the diversity of potential university faculty by supporting the doctoral aspirations of individuals who are:
1. Current upper division or graduate students in the CSU system
2. Economically and educationally disadvantaged
3. U.S. citizens or permanent residents
4. Leaders of tomorrow

Chancellor's Doctoral Incentive Program
The Chancellor's Doctoral Incentive Program provides financial assistance for underrepresented doctoral students who are interested in pursuing teaching careers within the CSU system. If the recipient is hired at a CSU campus as a tenure track faculty member, for each year of service, 20% of the loan is forgiven. For more information on this program, click here.
