Reviewing my bicycling webpage

Subjects

3 people took part. Two of them had no experience as cyclists and one of the 3 is a recreational user during the weekends.  One is a teacher the other a bartender, and the third is video producer for a fitness

company.

Think aloud task

I asked them to review my web site and they did agree.  I asked them to think of the web site as information for cyclists and also to see if the information on the site was clear and accessible to all.

Summary of think aloud

They all liked the site, but there were some issues they expressed concern or frustration while viewing my web site.  One issue was in the courses page.  They were able to link to their interested courses, but  they could not register for the class.  ÒWhatÕs up with that?Ó was the comment from one of reviewers of the site. They all found annoying the arrow windows that I had below the bicycle event pictures; they thought that if they clicked on the arrows then the pictures would scroll.  ÒWhy do you have the arrows?Ó was the question.

They found it confusing when they went to three areas of my web site: (1) the PDF document for women on success stories, (2) the San Diego calendar under the link come and join us, and (3) the courses page because there was no indication of how to return to the original site.

Summary of Post- test Interview.

All interviewers agreed that I need to create a link from the external documents to go back to the web site.  They commented the arrows next to the pictures were misleading.  If the arrows are not useful then take them off.  I responded that I am trying to learn how to make them work, but that if I cannot figure it out then I will take them off.  Another reviewer said that the page ÒAbout UsÓ should be changed to ÒWelcomeÓ so visitors will know they are in the home page.

Other recommendations given were to create links to bike stores, texts on the tables should be centered, and when clicking on a picture it should automatically enlarge.  I should also indicate when they are going to a different kind of document such as a PDF.

Findings Implemented

After the interviews for the alpha test I made the following changes:

  1. Create links to go back to my web page in the Course list and the San Diego Events pages.

  1. Indicate they are going to see a PDF document when clicking on success stories.

  1. Text in tables needs to be centered.

  1. Change the title of the main page from ÒAbout UsÓ to ÒWelcomeÓ

  1. Indicate How to register and the costs of the courses listed in the page ÒCoursesÓ

Findings that may be implemented

  1. If I cannot figure out how to make the arrows scroll to a new picture then I will take them off.

  1. Enlarge the picture when clicking on it.

  1. Create links to bike stores
