| Summary |
I have taught structural geology, and both
introductory and advanced field methods for the past 24 years at
SDSU. During this time I also have successfully supervised the
completion of 58 MS and 77 senior theses, and have published 56
papers, 8 guidebooks, and 73 abstracts. The great majority of my
publications were coauthored with students at SDSU.
In addition to the above, I have developed in the last 5 years an
online and a blended (mix of online and conventional lecture) introductory
geology course. The web site supporting this class consists of (1)
an electronic text book that I wrote, (2) a set of videos (screencasts)
of all of my lectures, (3) practice exams (study guides), and (4)
a complete laboratory manual. I am the sole author of all of this
material and own the copyright. The web site can be found at
http://www.geology.sdsu.edu/visualgeology/geology101.
The free laboratory manual is used in our standard introductory lab. In addition,
I have developed a CD (Notes on Planet Earth) that allows the students to print
out all of the written text material along with colored illustrations on a chapter
by chapter basis. The CD is available through the bookstore at a cost of $15.00.
During the summer 2006 I implemented the Geoscience Concept Inventory
assessment instrument for the online class. The results indicated
that 62.5% of the students completing the Geoscience Concept Inventory
exceeded the national average of a 4% improvement on the Rasch
Model score.
