Linguistics 101Introduction to LinguisticsNatural Language Systems From Speech to Meaning
This course will serve as an introduction
to the field of linguistics,
discussing issues of brain and language,
language and thought, language and evolution, language and gender;
Additionally we will the basic linguistic modes and levels:
speech, writing, words, and syntax.
Practice
The course textbook will be
An Introduction to Language,
by Victoria Fromkin, Robert Rodman, and Nina Hyams, available
in the campus bookstore.
There will be exercises for most
of the chapters covered.
The course begins with an brain and language
and moves on to a discussion of the parts
of grammar, sound, word, and syntax.
We will then move on to meaning, language and gender.
Prerequisites and Grading
No Prerequisites.
Grading will be based on exercises/projects and
take-home midterms and finals.
