Each individual in the group will be
assigned
one of four roles (topic area of expertise) to focus their research:
Historian | Doctor |
Psychologist | Economist
Historian ─
Who will focus on the history and origin of the
disease.
Individual responsibilities of the Historian are to:
- List the symptoms of the disease
- Explain the history and origin
- Describe current demographic and statistical
information for the area
of the world your team chooses to research.
Doctor ─ Who will
focus on medical treatment options.
Individual responsibilities for the Doctor are:
Describe a minimum of three types of
medical treatments for living with AIDS
including the following information:
- How it works
- Means of obtaining it (e.g. cost, paid for
by insurance, illegal means, experimental treatments from overseas, etc.)
- Success rates and statistics
- Common side effects and drug interactions
Treatments might include:
- Pharmacological-based treatment, such as
medication
- Nutritionally-based, such as healthy diet.
Psychologist ─ Who
will focus on
psychological treatment options and the
individual and societal aspects of AIDS.
Individual responsibilities of the Psychologist are to:
Describe a minimum of two types of psychological treatment
for living with AIDS
including the following information:
- How it works
- Means of obtaining it (e.g. cost, paid for
by insurance, illegal means, experimental treatments from overseas, etc.)
- Success rates and statistics
Discuss the individual and society consequences of the global spread of AIDS
- Individual (e.g. relationships with family,
friends, coworkers)
- Societal (e.g. fear, prejudiced, impact on
behavior such as increased “safe” sex practices, monogamy, etc.)
Economist ─ Who
will focus on
community support services and the global
consequences of the spread of AIDS.
Individual responsibilities of the Economist are:
Discuss the political and economic consequences of the global spread of AIDS
- Political (e.g. HIV screening, needle and
condom programs)
- Economic (e.g. for the individual,
community, state, feds, etc.)
Report at least two sources of “community” support for
individuals
living with AIDS (and/or their family members):
- One of the supportive organizations should
be within a fifty-mile radius of where the person lives.
- One of the support groups should be an
online support group, such that the individual or another individual can
obtain information and support electronically.
- Both support groups should be described and
you should report detailed instructions as to how to access each one. (E.g.,
address, telephone number; URL, etc.)
