At the start of each Academic Year,
Provost Nancy A. Marlin
hosts a reception to welcome newly arriving Tenure-Track faculty.


This event takes place at the University's
Mount Laguna Observatory
in the Cuyamaca Mountains, about 1 hour east of San Diego

This year's event was attended by nearly 150 guests,
including new Faculty members, family, friends,
and members of the University community.

New faculty members had an opportunity
to get acquainted with returning faculty members
and university leaders
in an idyllic mountain setting

Paul Etzel, Professor of Astronomy
and Director of the Mount Laguna Observatory
explained the history of the observatory

 

A colorful sunset provided a backdrop for a relaxed evening
as faculty and guests enjoyed a catered dinner

   

After dinner, guests attended a presentation by the Astronomy department
and were invited to gaze at planets and stars through
the observatory's precision telescopes

The University hosts a series of professional and social events
each year, in an effort to make our newest colleagues feel welcome.
