Edith Benkov, Associate Vice President for Faculty Affairs
Edith Benkov took up her position in Faculty Affairs in August 2010. Prior to this appointment, she completed three years as Chair of the University Senate, 2007-2010. Dr. Benkov started her career at San Diego State University in 1983 as a member of the Department of French and Italian. She chaired that department from 1989 to 1996. After the creation of the Department European Studies, she served as its chair from 2002 to 2010. She served as President of the CSU Foreign Language Council from 2004-2010 and as member of the Executive Board of the California Language Teachers Association. Dr. Benkov earned her Ph.D. in French Studies from the University of California Los Angeles.
Her research on issues of gender, sexuality and religious conflict in early modern Europe, and most particularly France, is internationally recognized. At SDSU, her primary areas of teaching have been in French and European Studies. She also worked on the development of the Gay and Lesbian Studies minor. Dr. Benkov has been involved in many professional organizations, including the Modern Language Association, the Renaissance Society of America and the Sixteenth Century Conference. She has published over sixty articles and essays and continues as an active scholar.
