Required Texts.

Professional Expectations.

1.     Punctual attendance:  Unexcused absence (any absence not due to a proven major illness or emergent event) and excessive tardiness (more than twice not suited out at the designated location and ready to begin class by 10:05 am or leaving class before dismissal), results in final course point deductions of 5 points (per absence) and 3 points (per tardy), respectively.

  1. Dress and Behavior:  Suit up in rubber cleats, bring a mitt/glove during softball, and wear activity-specific clothing as needed (e.g., shin guards). Expect to sweat a great deal and dress accordingly, however it is expected that you wear a top that covers your midriff (chest down to the waist), shorts that do not exceed mid-thigh in length, and sweats that are not skin tight. Obscene language (e.g., curse words, put-downs, sexualized talk, etc.) is unwelcome. Food and drink may be brought to class as needed.  Inappropriate dress or behavior results in final course point deductions of 3 points per instance.

  1. Assignment submission:  All assignments are due at the start of class and late work will not be accepted.  As all assignments are known in advance, they should be started and completed well before they are due.  E-mailing an assignment, printing it out ahead of time, and saving your work on disk and hard drive are methods of preventing late submission due to “catastrophic events.”  Missed quizzes or the final may be made up in cases where valid certification explains a student’s absence.

Course Logistics.

Approximately 5 weeks are devoted to each sport activity.  A basic introduction of a game, its goals, equipment, facilities, and safety is conducted. An activity is then introduced in its game form first in order for students to recognize the demands of a particular game, individual’s and team’s skill levels, and the common tactical and strategic problems encountered.  Students are then introduced to lead-up games, drills, and progressions commonly employed in teaching these activities in a secondary physical education setting.  A culminating tournament accompanies each sport mini-season.  An Olympiad based on all three sports and a final exam conclude the semester.

Description of Assignments

*All assignments are to be typed.

  1. Sport Education Observation: Observe an entire soccer or softball game at the youth, interscholastic, collegiate, or professional level (e.g., Little League, high school, Padres, Aztecs, Sockers).  Take complete notes during your observation so that you can prepare a typed report in which you FULLY describe how five primary features of sport education (Figure 1.1. p. 8 in Sport Education; not including culminating event) are evident at the event you attended.  Using material from Chapter 1 and your observations, describe how three of your observations/features of sport could be implemented in a secondary physical education setting. (Due October 29)

  1. Modified Games Activities:  Using Ch. 3 of the Changing Kids’ Games text as a guide, prepare a typed report of 2 modified games for a selected sport.  Format each activity as shown in Part II of the text (Ch. 5-8) and include a diagram.  Variation categories can be found on p. 76.  Do not include activities presented by the instructor or included in your text. You will teach and present one of your modified games to the class.  A single handout of the activity you present must be distributed to the class. (Due Day 4 of selected season)  Five extra credit points will be awarded for competent instruction (based on 347B content).  Sign-ups will take place on the second day of the semester.

  1. Choice Assignment:  Each student will select one assignment from the list below for one of the three sports presented in class.  Sign-ups will take place on the second day of the semester (Due next class meeting after selected season’s conclusion).

    1. Sports Medicine paper: List and describe the common injuries encountered in the sport selected (in a PE setting), how they can be prevented, and how they’re treated.  The paper must be based on reputable information found on the Internet and references to web sites must be provided.
    2. Equipment paper: Using physical education/sport equipment, assemble an equipment wish list for the selected sport, given a $1000 total budget and 40-student class size.  Full item-by-item description, quantity, cost, and rationale/justification for each item must be presented.
    3. Newspaper report:  Write a detailed/factual newspaper story (can include funny clichés and some comical writing) of a completed in-class game (see U-T Sports Section for examples) using newspaper style and formatting (e.g., dateline, column style, photographs).  Include game data (both team and individual) and interview quotes.  Grammar and spelling must be error-free.

  1. Cue Quizzes:  An objective (i.e., multiple choice, matching) and short answer format closed-book quiz will be given on teaching/performance cues for each sport.  Quizzes will be based on the Fronske text sections devoted to softball, flag football, and soccer (Conducted Day 6 of selected season).

  1. Final Exam:  An open-book exam on Sport Education will examine your understanding of the curriculum model’s theory and your ability to link class events of the semester to the theory.

Extra Credit

Daily records of individual students’ behavior as outlined in this syllabus and of individual/team behavior that supports the conduct of class (e.g., setting up playing areas, collecting equipment, transporting equipment, active participation, etc.) will be tallied.  Team members’ tallies will be added for an overall team score, which roughly reflects attitude.  At the end of the semester, first place team members will be awarded 6 extra credit points and second place team members will be awarded 3 extra credit points.  Individuals with more than –15 points due to attendance/dress/behavior infractions are not eligible for extra credit.
