ENS 341
Skill
Competency in Physical Education
Introduction
Prerequisite is ENS 303. THIS COURSE MUST BE COMPLETED WITH
A "C" OR BETTER PRIOR TO ENROLLING IN ENS 341. Concurrent enrollment
in both ENS 303 and 341 is acceptable. Bring appropriate documentation
(schedule or signed add slip) to Prof. Fletcher during the first week of class.
ENS
341 is required for all students who entered SDSU under the 1995‑96 or
later catalog and are enrolled (or plan to enroll) in the Single Subject
Teaching Credential Program. In other
words, you plan to teach in K-12.
The
class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7 AM in PG 152 or in
another location (see Testing Schedule on p. 4). All of the written tests
will take place in M120 at 7 AM sharp. Sometimes a room change must be made
‑ please check the bulletin board outside my office (ENS 312) for any
changes the morning of a test. You MUST
bring ScanTron Form #882 and a #2 pencil to
take the written test.
After
the orientation meeting on Tuesday, January 21st in Peterson Gym 152 (main gym), the remaining classes will be
devoted to evaluating your knowledge about
specific sports (pass the required written test administered on Tuesdays) as
well as your ability to perform specific
sports skills (demonstrate your ability as an athlete - completed on
Thursdays). This course does not
include instruction – this course evaluates your knowledge about
specific sports and activities and evaluates your athletic ability. The written tests are difficult.
Thee
tests cover rules, strategy, terms and dimensions of the actual venue. The pass rate increases dramatically if the
required book is carefully read; otherwise, the pass rate is between 25% - 40%.
Peculiarities
of ENS 341
1. You do not have to be formally enrolled in
ENS 341 to begin "chipping away" at satisfactorily completing the
requirements for each sport / activity.
For
example, several students passed both the written and skills tests in some of
these sports last semester. These
students were not enrolled in ENS 341. However, they (like you) are
given the flexibility of identifying and selecting those written and skills
tests which they believed they would pass and signed up for these. Many of these same students still have more
tests to take.
A. When
should I officially enroll in ENS 341?
The best
time to enroll is when you have completed all of the requirements for 341.
B. Or when you are absolutely certain that
the remaining course requirements for ENS 341 will be completed during the
semester you enrolled in this course.
It is incumbent that you bring me proof that these sports/activities
have been completed. This proof can be in the form of transcripts, grade
reports, or appropriate documentation. I will check each activity completed so
there will be a record of your progress.
Be sure you keep a copy of any documentation you give me in case
there is a question about your progress.
ATTENTION ! The grade of Incomplete (I) will not be issued if you
were not able to complete all the requirements for ENS 341 during the semester
in which you were enrolled! Please see Page 422 of the 2002-2003 SDSU
General Catalog for the university policy relative to assigning a grade of
Incomplete. For this reason, I strongly encourage you to enroll in ENS 341 when
you only have one or two remaining requirements to complete or you have
finished ALL of the requirements.
In
addition, carefully read the course description of ENS 341 on page 239 of the
2002-2003 SDSU General Catalog. Be sure to keep track of how many of the
required activities / sports you have successfully completed or have credible
certifications for.
To
reiterate, if you determine that you have a few requirements remaining that can
be completed this semester (usually this situation happens around the time when
you are a Senior and will graduate this academic year), enroll in ENS 341. If
in doubt, consult with Prof. Fletcher.
2. Look over
the dates when written tests and the skills tests will be given. If you are
comfortable that you know the rules, strategies, etc., of a particular sport,
you can sign up to take the written test.
If you pass the written test, you can sign up for the skills test that
will be administered 48 hours later.
DEADLINE
If you do not sign up for the written test by 5:00 P.M. on
the Monday (sign up sheets will be posted outside my office, ENS 312)
immediately preceding the test (usually administered on Tuesday) YOU WILL NOT
QUALIFY TO TAKE THE TEST. NO
EXCEPTIONS.
When you pass both the written test and skills test, Prof.
Fletcher will record this accomplishment and you can begin to "chip
away" at completing the requirements for ENS 341.
NOTE: You must complete both the written test and the skills
test during the same semester. In other words, if you pass the written test but
do not show up to take the skills test, you must take the written test again
the following semester.
*** ALL WRITTEN TESTS FOR ENS 341 REQUIRE THE USE OF
SCANTRON # 882 ES. Accept no substitute!!! Bring a #2 pencil to the test.
THERE
ARE NO "MAKE‑UP EXAMINATIONS". IF YOU MISS A PARTICULAR TEST,
YOU WILL HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL NEXT SEMESTER TO TAKE IT.
3. There are several ways that the
requirements for completing ENS 341 can be completed:
a. You can "test out" of most of the
required activities by passing both the written and skills tests offered in ENS
341.
Please note that the testing schedule which follows
identifies the only tests that will be made available through ENS 341.
If you had planned to "test out" of a sport and that sport is not on
the schedule (for example, you can no longer test out of the golf elective) and
you plan to graduate during the current academic year, you must take a class
in that particular sport or have appropriate certification; WSI card
satisfies swimming requirement, certificate from martial arts studio satisfies
self-defense.
EXAMPLE: ln order to satisfy the golf elective, you
could take a golf course at SDSU or at a community college and bring your
transcript to me. In addition, you could complete the golf requirement if you
play on the SDSU golf team, serve as a golf pro, or tour as a professional
golfer.
Bring the appropriate documentation to me.
b. Provide certification that you are very
competent in certain sports/skills. For example, if you have a current WSI card
or certificate that verifies that you are a lifeguard, hold a belt in martial
arts, or other appropriate documentation, make a copy and give this to Prof.
Fletcher. If the certification /
documentation is valid, you will have proven your ability in that particular
sport / activity and it will be recorded that you have successfully completed
it.
c. If you are or were an athlete on an
intercollegiate team ‑ junior college / community college or 4 year
college ‑ for one full season or longer, please provide me with
appropriate documentation and you could complete the requirements for :
(1)
Softball, (2) Volleyball, (3) Basketball, (4) Soccer, (5) Football (6) Tennis,
(7) Swimming, (8) Wrestling, (9) Golf or (10) Gymnastics.
SUMMARY
In order to successfully complete the requirements for ENS
341, you must comply with the following:
1. Complete the prerequisite which is
ENS 303. Bring a copy of your
transcript, a copy of your final grade report, current course schedule which
will provide the necessary information that the prerequisite has been completed
or you are currently enrolled.
2. With the exception of physical fitness
(there is no written test for this requirement yet) you must FIRST pass the
written test before you are eligible to complete the skills test.
As
reflected in the schedule, written tests will be given on Tuesday. If you pass
the written test, show up 48 hours later (Thursday) to complete the athletic
performance component. You do not need to sign up for the skills test. I will
assume that all those students who passed the written test will show up for the
skills test. The results of the written tests will be posted outside my office
door by 2:00 p.m. each Tuesday.
The testing dates are "set
in stone". There will be no makeup tests.
EXCEPTIONS:
The skills test may be postponed due to bad weather. This means that all those
skills tests that require the use of an outside venue will be postponed if it
rains hard. However, all the skills tests that take place indoors (badminton,
basketball and volleyball) will take
place as scheduled.
3. The State of California Commission on
Teaching Credentials has determined that prospective physical education
teachers must satisfy the following 10 sports/abilities/experiences PLUS one
additional elective
REQUIRED
ACTIVITIES
(1) Softball, (2) Soccer, (3) Basketball, (4) Volleyball,

The pool has been
demolished. In its place stands a glorious monument to the Department of Athletics. You must satisfy the swimming requirement by
enrolling in a swimming course at one of the local community colleges, YMCA,
JCC, etc.
Please feel free
to come into my office to ask questions, record completed requirements,
etc.
A. Outdoor Experience
Requirement
The
ENS Department may not provide you with a course to complete this
requirement. What you need to do is locate an appropriate Outdoor Experience
opportunity on your own; "Can I go camping with friends up in the
mountains or at the beach over the weekend" ? Unfortunately no. The
Outdoor Experience must be part of a formal educational program.
In
1994, the Commission on Teaching Credentialing for The State of California
identified outdoor education activities as consisting of "study of outdoor education activities such as orienteering,
outdoor survival skills, ropes, canoeing, hiking and backpacking." (Standard
#5, p. 26). The intent of the outdoor education requirement that the State of
California would like K‑12 teachers to have is clear. Many of these
activities and others that are closely related and are acceptable are available
through the ENS Department / Mission Bay Aquatic Center. The Associated
Students offer programs through the Leisure Connection and offer appropriate
classes and activities through the ARC as well. The experience must be for a
duration of 16 hours or more.
This
is a relatively non‑stressful requirement to complete. This can be done
by participating in a Leisure Connection or ARC trip to the great outdoors.
If
you have any questions about what constitutes an appropriate "Outdoor
Experience," be sure to consult with Prof. Fletcher PRIOR to engaging in
the activity/experience.
B. Self‑Defense Requirement . Perhaps the best way to complete this
requirement is to enroll in a self defense course or a martial arts course.
Provide Prof. Fletcher with certification /documentation that you have
completed a course in this area with a minimum of 16 hours of instruction. If
you are a law enforcement officer, simply provide a copy of your I.D. Enrolling in a kick boxing class at the gym
does not satisfy this requirement – please don’t ask.
C. Electives
You
need to complete a course ( C grade or better) or provide documentation
that you are (or were) an accomplished athlete in one of the following:
Dance Gymnastics
Football
Wrestling Archery Golf
Racquetball
VERY IMPORTANT!!
May 15th AT 12 NOON will be the LAST DAY AND
FINAL HOUR that
Prof.
Fletcher will be available to record completed requirements. NO EXCEPTIONS.
"What
happens if a course I am taking this semester will not have official grades
turned into the Records Office until after May 15th?" No problem. Simply
have the instructor write me a sentence or two on letter head (hand written is
fine) stating that your grade is OR that you will "receive a grade of
"B" or higher in . Make sure he/she signs it and give this
document to me (under my door, in my mail box in the department office, give it
to me personally) no later than December 30th and all is well. Unfortunately my
e‑mail works about 50% of the time so this is not an option. If the
instructor is an SDSU faculty member or teaching assistant, I will gladly
accept a phone call or voice mail message. ANOTHER METHOD is to use the grade
slips located outside my door. Your instructor can complete this and you can
put under my door, give to me in person, or have placed in my mail box.
I
have ordered a number of books that should help you prepare for the tests. They are available in the campus
book store. ALL OF THE TEST QUESTIONS
ARE FROM THE FOLLOWING BOOKS. READ EACH
BOOK CAREFULLY AND THOROUGHLY AND THE
PROBABILITY OF SUCCESSFULLY PASSING THE TEST WITH THE MINIMUM SCORE, 70%,
INCREASES DRAMATICALLY.
