Working Title: A Tribute to Wild Red

Subjects

I interviewed three people with different levels of internet and website experience. Only one was a middle aged relative of the subject of the project. One teaches educational technology at National University, the other is a SDSU student with an Associate Degree in Computer Programming.

Think Aloud Task

Find the two methods of navigating on the Welcome page.

Summary of Think Aloud

Two of the three users easily identified the two methods of navigation. The relative only identified the verbal menu across the page, not the time line.  The teacher commented that the verbal menu should be replaced with a complete menu running down the left side of the page, on each page. When going to the other main pages she commented she wasnÕt sure what page she was on. The student said she wished the link would stay highlighted while she was on that page so she would know where she was. She also looked for a link at the bottom of each page back to the Welcome page. The relative commented she couldnÕt see the small print well. The student and the teacher commented that the white letters on the boxes in the timeline were hard to read. All said they liked the color of the background, the idea and layout.

Summary of Post-test Interview

The teacher suggested the title of each page be at the top of the page .The student thought that each main menu item should have the dates it covers corresponding to the dates under that picture on the timeline. The student thought the timeline should have lines like a family tree connecting the sections to the timeline. The relative wanted more definition between the timeline, writing and menu. All three liked the background and lettering colors. They all thought the font was easy to read. The relative wanted to see a page with War Stories my Dad used to tell, but didnÕt have any other real suggestions for the website. The teacher thought the timeline should be at the top and the collage at the bottom.

Findings to be implemented

As a result of the alpha test, I will make the following changes:

1)  Put the corresponding dates with the titles of each menu item.

2)  Put a complete menu in a list on the left of each page instead of the drop down menu.

3)  Make the letters on the timeline boxes dark.

4)  Put the name of each page at the top.

5)  Make the type larger.

Findings that will not be implemented

1)  Put the timeline at the top.

2)  Highlight the menu.

3)  Put a Welcome link at the bottom of each page.

4)  Make page of war stories.
