project alpha usability test report

Working title:
SDSU Live
Report Author:
Jennifer Eller
Date:
December 2, 2009

Brief Profile of Users:

Three users tested the site.

  • Two females and one male
  • One current SDSU undergraduate student
  • Two college graduates unaffiliated with SDSU
  • Of the three only the current SDSU undergraduate student is part of the target audience for the site

Think Aloud Task:

All users were asked to explore the website, find an Entertainment announcement, and find how to submit an announcement.

Summary of Think Aloud:

All three users were able to navigate the site easily, find an Entertainment announcement, and find how to submit an announcement. One user was unsure of where to find announcements of sporting events. Another user suggested having a form on the website to submit announcements rather than having users send an email with the announcement information. All users requested more information in the details section of the Entertainment announcement (such as a link to Ticketmaster, band websites, or other websites with more info).

Summary of Posttest:

A variety of comments were made. Users commented that they liked:

  • logo
  • color scheme/overall look
  • slogan
  • that users can submit announcements
  • the idea of a website like this for SDSU

Users suggested the following changes or additions:

  • add more info in event details, including external links
  • no need for explanation on home page or make it a paragraph
  • take announcement submissions via an online form versus email
  • in about section include information about the creator and an email address different from the submission email address
  • make bottom portion more visual (colors/pictures)
  • add a calendar feature
  • on home page list events happening today or the week’s featured events (a list of “don’t miss these events this week”)
  • have an option to “send to a friend/reminder” individual event details

Findings to be Implemented:

  • add more event details
  • include information about website creator
  • add color/pictures
  • revise home page and list featured events
  • either add sports tab or add the word sports to the entertainment tab
  • include a form for submissions (attempt to include will be made)

Findings that will not be Implemented:

  • a calendar feature will not be added as the site will be listing events occurring in the near future and announcements will be listed in date order
  • the option to send announcements to email will not be added at this time, but may be added in the future if I learn how to implement such a feature
