Dermabrasion
Do you wish you could do for your face what you do for your silverware or your shoes or your jewelry? Give it a good "polishing" and get to the beauty that's underneath? Like everyone else, the skin on your face suffers daily. For some, it's too much sun. For others it's the remnants of teenage acne. Or maybe you have an old injury, with a bad scar left behind as a souvenir. Whatever the cause, you are left with a physical reminder you'd rather not have. If so, you may be a good candidate for dermabrasion (or dermaplaning). Please call Dr. Nowak at (619)420-1840 to find out if you are a good candidate for dermabrasion. This is where you will have a consultation to see if this procedure is for you. You're a good candidate for dermabrasion or dermaplaning if you have:
Dermabrasion and dermaplaning may also be preferred by people with slightly darker skin when treating small areas, since they may be less likely to result in a change in color in those areas. They can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence, but neither treatment will remove all scars and flaws or prevent aging. Men and women of all ages, from young people to older adults, can benefit from dermabrasion and dermaplaning.
The most important functions served by the consultation are getting information and asking questions. The more you know about these procedures and understand how they can work for you, the better able you'll be to decide if they're right for you. Therefore, call Dr. Nowak to talk about what areas to work on and what results should be expected. You'll have an examination and more than likely, a medical history will be taken. Factors taken into account prior to the treatment are: age, skin condition and any previous plastic surgeries. Any of these could affect the results of treatment. Dr Nowak will want to know about what kind of skin regimen you follow. He may want you to pre-treat your skin or change the way you normally take care of it. If you're taking any medications or vitamins you may be told to stop. If you smoke, you'll usually be asked to stop well before the treatment; smoking can interfere with healthy healing. Dr. Nowak will explain this procedure to you in detail, along with its risks and benefits, the recovery period, and the costs. Remember, if you have questions, now is the time to ask them. So call Dr. Nowak at (619)420-1840 to receive your consultation.
The amount of time the procedure takes will depend on how large an area of skin is involved. If scarring is especially deep or a very large area is involved, the procedure may need to be done more than once or in stages. Dermabrasion and dermaplaning can both be performed fairly quickly. They usually take from a few minutes to an hour and a half, depending on how large an area of skin is involved. It's not uncommon for the procedures to be performed more than once, or in stages, especially when scarring is deep or a large area of skin is involved. Using a high speed rotating sanding wheel (or brush) that's attached to a motorized handle, the millimeter thin, damaged top layer of skin is scraped away. The scraping continues until the wrinkles, scar or blemish is removed or less visible. The result is that lower layers of the skin are stimulated by this procedure into producing new collagen that results in a fresher skin surface.
Ointments or bandages will be applied to keep the skin moist; they will stay on for 5 - 7 days until the new top layer of skin reforms. Your skin will be very red - this could last weeks or months (easily covered with make up). You'll be swollen -- swelling begins to lessen in a few days to a week. Tenderness or a mild sunburn sensation is normal. Eating and talking may be difficult. You'll probably feel some tingling, burning, or aching. Any pain can be controlled with medications prescribed by your surgeon. Your new skin will be a bit swollen, sensitive, and bright pink for several weeks. (The pinkness could take as long as three months to fade completely). If you remember the scrapes you got when you fell down as a child, you'll have an idea of what to expect from this type of procedure. A scab or crust will form over the treated area as it begins to heal. This will fall off as a new layer of tight, pink skin forms underneath. Your face may itch as new skin starts to grow, and your surgeon may recommend an ointment to make you more comfortable. (If ointment was put on immediately after procedure, little or no scab will form). Healing after this treatment will be a gradual process. However, expect to see a significant improvement in the quality and appearance of your skin immediately. Over the course of six months, up to a year, you will continue to see improvement. During this time, you can begin gradually resuming your normal activities. You can expect to be back at work in about two weeks. It's important to protect your skin from the sun until the pigment has completely returned to your skin as long as 6 -12 months. Dr. Nowak's patients will be pleased with their results - smooth and rosy skin. You'll very quickly see a very significant change in your skin. And with additional healing time, you'll note continued improvement (in some cases for the next 6-12 months). You should enjoy your younger looking, smoother, healthier skin for many years. So
