Collagen treatments for a younger appearance
Full, sensuous, pouty lips. They've been in fashion for decades. From Marilyn Monroe to Sophia Loren to Angelina Jolie, full sexy lips have always been a key element of what we consider beautiful. But now, you don't have to be born with them to have them. Nor do you have to watch helplessly as the plump lips of your youthful face thin out due to aging. Now there are a variety of procedures - both temporary and permanent - that can give almost any woman fuller, richer, more sensuous lips. One approach is very simple and straightforward. Dr. Nowak will take either collagen or fat from another area of the body and injects it directly into the lips. A local anesthetic is used to keep the discomfort to a minimum, and the entire procedure takes about 30 minutes. Since both the collagen and fat are gradually absorbed by the body, you'll need touch-up injections to maintain your look. The result can be immediate and dramatic. Instantly, your lips look fuller and richer. And they look totally natural. No one should be able to tell that they aren't the lips you were born with. This procedure has soared in popularity since it's been revealed that some of Hollywood's leading actresses are using it. Lip augmentation benefits include:
The best way to find out if you're a good candidate is to arrange a consultation and speak to Dr. Nowak at (619) 420-1840.
The consultation is when you meet face-to-face with Dr. Nowak and have the opportunity to ask questions and get information. The more you understand about these procedures, the more able you'll be able to decide if one of them is for you. Tell Dr. Nowak how you'd like your lips to ultimately look. Be realistic. One size does not fit all. You want your lips to look sexy, not scary. Except for bovine collagen injections, preliminary tests are not needed. Bovine collagen has been known to cause allergic reactions in some. Because of this, a skin allergy test needs to be done well before the procedure; at least four weeks to make sure there's no allergic reaction to the material. Dermalogen, which is a human collagen, does not require a skin test prior to the procedure.
If you choose one of the injection techniques, your doctor may swab a topical anesthetic on the lips, which makes it a less painfull procedure. During any of the grafts procedures, your lips will be completely numbed with a local anesthesia. You will not feel anything while the procedure is taking place.
Most lip augmentation procedures take about 45 minutes, although it depends on the technique employed. Lip augmentation techniques fall into three basic categories: injections, grafting or local flaps. Each one requires a slightly different technique, so we've broken them out individually for you: INJECTIONS
This method involves a very simple, straightforward approach. Dr. Nowak injects a semi-liquid substance into the lips to generally enhance them. This method can also help correct asymmetries of the lips. These injections can be repeated with little to no danger; some materials are more permanent than others. The two most popular substances used are collagen and fat, although there are several options: COLLAGEN
Collagen is a purified preparation of bovine (cow) skin. It's been in use since 1981, and is the oldest lip augmentation technique available. It is available in different concentrations and compositions. Collagen is considered reasonably safe, although it requires an allergy test before the procedure. It's very effective, although its effects are temporary. Collagen injections tend to last between four weeks and three months. The substance is easily absorbed into the body. Extra material can be added at any time. DERMALOGEN
This substance is prepared from the skin of a human cadaver. In other words, Dermalogen is a human collagen preparation. It does not require a skin test. The material is non-immunogenetic (you cannot contract an illness, like hepatitis, from the donor). It is often used because it lasts slightly longer than collagen. The effects are also temporary (four weeks to three months). AUTOLOGEN
Made from the patient's own (excess skin) removed during another procedure (i.e. facelift). The extracted material is then sent to a lab, where the natural collagen is squeezed out of the skin, prepared and preserved. This is more resistant to reabsorption than collagen or Dermalogen injections. As a result, the effects may last longer. This may be a good option for people who have required repetitive collagen injections. FAT INJECTION
The "fat" is fat taken from one part of your body and reinjected into the lips. The results are generally good (especially after the first injection). The results are short term, usually two to three months. The "fat" is gradually absorbed back into the body. Most people need two or three sessions to get the results they want. GRAFTING
This is a second type of procedure commonly used in lip augmentation procedures. This involves more active work as opposed to injecting fillers. A substance or material is inserted or grafted to your body. There are a few types of materials used: ALLODERM This is a sheet of purified human collagen tissue which has been purified and rendered non-immunogenic (you can not contract an illness from it). It is related to Dermalogen, which can be injected. Alloderm is rolled up and inserted into an incision made on either side of your lips. A few stitches are used to seal the incisions. Alloderm is well-tolerated and does not cause allergic reactions. You do not require a skin test prior to the procedure. It may last for up to a year. GORETEXTM GoretexTM is a synthetic substance. It's the same material that keeps you dry when it's raining. But don't be alarmed, it's been used in more than 5 million humans to date, most often in vascular bypass surgeries. Since 1988, it has been used for facial implants. It's a desirable filler because it is a bio-compatible (meaning it causes little to no tissue reaction). It also increases the reddish color and projection of the lips (which many people find desirable). The results are permanent, so you can avoid coming back for repeat procedures. GoretexTM can be slightly palpable to the touch (distorting your lips) and in some cases make your smile look crooked. If this occurs, the material can be easily removed and replaced. Infection can be a problem with GoretexTM as well. LOCAL FLAPS
This procedure involves two techniques based on a flap inside your mouth and one outside. The Inside technique was established in the 1950s, and was the first technique employed to enlarge the lips. It is still used today, but because it is more invasive, it is used when other techniques have been unsuccessful. The drawbacks to this procedure can be that the results diminish with time and there is the chance of scarring and irregularity. The Outside technique involves an incision in the upper lip that follows the lip line. Some skin is removed and the lip is lifted and turned outward to create a fuller look. However, there is always a permanent scar on the lip edge.
Regardless of the technique used, you'll find that your lips are fuller and more pouty. They will go great with the rest of your face. However, your new look may not last forever. Some methods are temporary, which give you a chance to try out your new look before considering a more permanent solution. Or you have the option of returning for additional visits to maintain the new appearance of your lips, for as long as you want to keep them. So
